You're getting a better hang of the game compared to when I first started playing, and I went in there with a lot of prior knowledge. The physics based animations is great, one of the main factors that pulled me into Rain World, and it becomes a lot more understandable + controllable with familiarity. Being aimless early on is completely reasonable feeling as it was the same case for most that first play the game. I Highly encourage exploring regions, memorizing paths and where you are in the middle of it all. It's both a very slug-cat thing to do, and also the best skill to find and explore other regions. Also, I got stuck in Drainage System too, and Shaded Citadel. These two regions ended up being an early bottleneck to me when I wasn't confident with movement or good with map layout. Find a light if you want to brave Shaded Citadel's darkness, and be ready to take a lot of risks diving in Drainage System. Some general tips: Rocks stun longer and knock over lizards when hitting the head. There's short window to react when grabbed, throwing a rock/spear in that moment will maybe free yourself. You can view the map while hibernating, this can help with planning routes. Finally, I recommend keeping that blue pearl. Most importantly, take your time with learning about the game. A lot of failure happens, and getting a laugh at unfortunate/goofy moments you or other creatures get into helps while moving from an area to another.
