They entered into partnership with Panasonic on battery tech last year, even though they already have deals with Chinese CATL (via Changin) and Chinese owned Envision. That's either a bet that Panasonic has the best tech going forward or a move to reduce dependency on Chinese batteries. Either way it's a bet on their own platforms going forward, just like betting on the rotary extender and partnering with Toyota on hybrid tech was.
