Me: Pepperdine MA, PsyD. Great, albeit expensive, experience for me. Retired after 18 years as a LPC, LMFT, Psychological Assistant, and Psychologist. Never had a problem getting licensed in ANY state. Dr. Elaine Mura was my major advisor...and she was great, but the more I stayed away from Seaver, the happier I was. For example, Dennis Lowe was the worst teacher I have ever had in my several graduate degree programs. I also have an MPA degree. LOL Word to the wise, at Seaver, if you aren't Church of Christ, you will be 2nd class on-campus. Is it worth it? NO! CSPP is a much better option. BTW, my best year shrinking heads in private practice was $85K. The era of private practice is OVER. You will end up working for an agency.

@@lorna3240 well the licensure board is saying I don’t meet the maladaptive behaviors requirement because I didn’t take it at Pepperdine at a “graduate level”. It doesn’t have anything to do with my undergrad school. I am still in the process of addressing it with both the board and Pepperdine. I will post an update when I know!

@@michaelastankova3585 there were a couple classes like research or statistics that are somewhat more difficult. But that’s also because those subjects are not really an interest of mine. But most of the other classes are fairly easy (especially if you have a background in psych already) but definitely very time consuming!! @@denaelynn_ thank you so much!! <3 I'm really interested in studying psychology in the US, I'm from Europe so it's a bit confusing for me 😅 after graduation, you were able to get the license for counseling? Or how does it work? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just happy I found someone from this uni!! ❤️❤️ xxx
@denaelynn_3 ай бұрын
@@michaelastankova3585 in the US they make it particularly difficult for counselors honestly. After graduating you can apply to take the first counseling exam, if you pass that you can apply for an associates licensure. Then you have to work under a supervisor for 3000 hours. After you achieve that you have to apply and pass another exam before you can be independently licensed. Licensure is also different state by state so let’s say you get licensed in the state of California, it doesn’t mean you will automatically have a counseling license in every other US state (at least that’s how it currently stands). So yeah, honestly, it’s quite a long strenuous process. 😖

I completely agree with you and am experiencing this right now. Unfortunately, so is just about everyone else I’ve spoken to who is in the program right now. I had heard that this was an issue so I started searching for sites pretty early but live in a somewhat smaller area so there aren’t a ton near me. They sent me a site to apply to and when I contacted them they said their program didn’t meet the requirements. Why would Pepperdine send me a site they haven’t confirmed meets the requirements. Then, a site I applied to and was offered a position with all on my own got so frustrated with Pepperdine not getting back to them that they had to move on. Now I’m back to square one and afraid I’m going to have to settle for a site that I have no interest in, if I’m even lucky enough to get that. I’ve appreciated most of the rest of the program. But if we can’t get a practicum site, we can’t become a therapist which is the whole point. I’m extremely disappointed.

Such great honest content. Now that I'm in the thick of it (grad school) I can see why there is such a lack of mental health counselors in California. I mean it's been so hard for me to get a practicum site here and the school I go to sucks with zero support from them , working and being a mom I feel so defeated at the moment. But your video did encourage me to not give up so THANK YOU!

I’m glad she realized it’s not worth it. For anyone reading this comment who is considering a master’s in counseling but can’t afford “prestige” universities, remember that the most important factors are CACREP accreditation and state licensure approval. PEPPERDINE is not CACREP accredited, which is a significant drawback given its high cost. Make sure your program is accredited and has a strong placement team for finding you a practicum. The license you get from an accredited program is what truly matters, not the name of the school.
@denaelynn_5 ай бұрын
Pepperdine or at least the program I did was CACREP accredited. I don’t know the status now, but it was at the time I was enrolled. Other than that, agree with your comment 💯

@@denaelynn_ Thank you for sharing!From my research and current information, it appears that Pepperdine’s Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program is not currently CACREP accredited. Thanks for sharing! I know you touched on it, but I was under the impression that you can make good money in private practice. It seems like the numbers would add up if you take insurance and have a good number of clients. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated!
@denaelynn_5 ай бұрын
Yes! Private practice you can sometimes make more money. From those I know personally who have private practices mainly make “a lot” of money if they have people working under them or if you have an entirely virtual private practice. There are a lot of other costs you have to pay when having a private practice such as rent for the space, malpractice insurance, liability insurance, health insurance, etc. There are pros and cons it just depends on your preferences!

Hi! I am currently applying. I don't have research/formal clinical experience but I have a good GPA and a psychology degree with work and relevant volunteer experiences. Do you think this is enough for acceptance? Is clinical experience required when I apply?
@denaelynn_6 ай бұрын
I am definitely not an expert on university acceptance! But having a good educational background and then having other experiences (such as volunteering) I think would be very beneficial. Pull what you learned/what you’ll take into this career from those experiences when you write your personal statement!

Good evening, National University (the university I'm attending) does not offer help in placement. However, I am searching around my city to find the best placement for me. I wanted to ask if most practicum sites approve students to intern for them? Or is it possible to also be denied? I guess I'm living with the fear of not being able to find one that I like and if I do, I get denied. I had an interview today and I assumed it went well but they said it would take a week to hear back via email. Thank you!
@denaelynn_6 ай бұрын
It depends what area you are in I would suspect. I would say most of time if you are not applying at a super competitive site you will get the internship, but there is always a chance as with any job. I apologize as I know that probably doesn’t help your anxiety but it’s honestly hard to say :(

I have a BS in psych and have been considering doing my masters in counseling also but I have a whole different set of factors against me than you😅 two little kids and a husband In the army. One question I have is can you take your time getting the 3000 hrs or do you have to get them within a certain period? And do you think your degree prepares you for the preliminary licensure exam or does that require extra studying on your part?
@denaelynn_9 ай бұрын
It might be different per state. But I think for Illinois there is no maximum you can get the hours in but there is a minimum of 1 year. I don’t think my program prepared me for the licensure exam. Some friends I have told me they had a class in their program that helps them prepare but even with that more studying was required for them. So definitely time consuming!
