Thanks for sharing this, you're quite brave and courageous, can't even image the toxic stigma of "snitching" affected you later on, its really disappointing that schools/universities require more effort from the victim to address the issue, and most of the time I feel like it's pointless because nothing really happens, which is saddening, liked for the algorithm, let's blow this up

Thank you so much for making this video, it's so hard to know if accomodation actually looks the way it does in the photos! I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about Sailsbury court? Is there a good social scene? Are most people friendly? Is there anything you don' t like about the halls? I'm thinking of applying there next year and I want any info I can get!

Your racist neighbor is a disgusting coward. I hope he gets a taste of his own medicine. With the luxury of objectivity usually these people are just shit and deserve no respect or time from us. They just want to get to us and we shouldn’t let them get to us.

I am horrified by this. I attended the University of Edinburgh for four years some time ago, and no-one would have even dared to voice racist views such as these, then. Most appalling is the failure of everyone else in your WhatsApp group to condemn this vile behaviour. This is simply shocking. I am so sorry this happened. With racism, we seem to be going backward at the moment - a very sad development and a sign of the poisonous far-right political atmosphere in which we all seem to be living right now.

So awful to hear this. I cannot believe this kind of stuff still happens. Clearly Scotland has so much more to learn and change in regards to the views on racism. I really hope institutions like our universities take these allegations seriously, people like this have no place in society. Yours sincerely, a white guy from Glasgow.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I often feel isolated in a group of white people,,,, as in I feel like I can only connect to the BAME community as a poc. Would you say that you felt isolated at Edin? Sorry if this is phrased awkwardly LOL
@HaddyJeng3 жыл бұрын
No you worded it just fine! And yeah... I definitely felt like that at some point because sometimes I couldn’t fully be myself. For example, through the music I listen to or the food I cook, basically I couldn’t fully indulge in elements of my culture as I would have been able to with other POC in the BAME community.

It disgusts me that racism is really downplayed in Scotland. Even the most racist state in America is much less racist than Scotland. Scottish people think of themselves as nice people when many of them are just being nice to white people. If you tell white Scottish people you experienced racism, they would most likely be very confused and responded in shock by saying 'Really?'. Yep, because how could they possibly know? They're white. If a black person born and raised here face racism, I can't imagine what it would be like for those who're not from here and don't speak perfect English. Although I'm not Black, I have to deal with racism on a daily basis because I'm also a minority here. I can only say that the only way to fight racism is to stay strong so hang in there sis! I was planning to move to Edinburg for work but I think I need to do more research. Would you say London is less racist than Edinburg in general?

I really appreciated the disclosure of the "crazy" guys that almost prey on girls. Although I'm a guy, it did show me that there will inevitably be those people still stuck in their high school / immature ways or are even worse than they were before with their newfound "freedom". Thanks for this, it's helpful. (^-^)

@HaddyJeng4 жыл бұрын
Cheryl Fender heya x so I lived on the 3rd floor so I’m not too sure. However if you’re living in the same building, I used to walk past the ground floor rooms to get to my lift. So I guess the only thing that could be an issue is noise, however when I lived there I didn’t notice that as much. Hope that helps x

Hey! Just wondering, did you prefer Salisbury or Pollock Halls (if the horrible incident hadn’t happened at Salisbury)? How were the people at Pollock (I’ve heard the stereotype about lots of cliques of posh private school people)? And how was the food? Do you feel non-catered accommodation like Salisbury is sociable enough and easy to make friends in? 🧡🧡hope you’re well x
@HaddyJeng4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for watching and sorry for getting back to you do late. Both places were quite nice and I liked them for different reasons. Pollock felt like a little student village which was cure and you had communal dinners which made things very sociable in that sense. Salisbury had great facilities, usually organised events on the accomodation to get people together creating a great sense of community. If I had to choose, I would go Salisbury. It had great facilities, I loved how international and varied the community was (Pollock stereotypes are true, especially in Chancellor's but the different houses have very different cultures - like one had a lot of international students), I also love the freedom of making your own food. Pollock food was good but it wasn't amazing so if you're not fussy about food it does the job. In terms of socialising, Salisbury did hold cute events to help get people together e.g. we did a GBBO screening in the common room where they provided cakes and hot beverages which was cute. Also if you have good flatmates, the kitchen a great place to get together because they are fairly big, have a tv and look great! Hope that helps, sorry for the word vomit x

Haddy Jeng thank you so much that’s really helpful:)) think I’m gonna go for self-catered accommodation x do you know of any other nice self-catered halls that friends were in or anything in Edinburgh?

I had a similar experience. I was at UoE for a year 5 years ago. I changed dormitory after only a week because a Scot flatmate made me the butt of his racist jokes. I felt so terrible and very sad I didn't want to live there. When I finally complained to the accomodation, he started to cry in front of the officers and played depressed. So even though I was the victim, I was the one who had to break the flat contract and look for a new dorm because between the two of us, I was the more mentally stable. But I was glad I moved out because the new flat was much better and my new flatmates were not racists. I did have the best 2 sems at the UoE eventually. Generally Scots are very friendly. I was just unlucky to have a racist one for a flatmate. He loved stand up comedy so much and thought he was being funny if he used me for his racist jokes.

Pleaaaase be careful in Barcelona (especially in the center like Las Ramblas), there are a lot of thieves looking for tourists. Even in the hotels in the reception they warn you. They can just grab your camera or purse and run away. I visit Barcelona now and then because I have friends there and even they tell me. Even though nothing happened thankfully. Just be careful next time please🙏🏼. Greetings from Switzerland!
