I feel bad for Curly. Don't take this the wrong way. Anya suffered a lot, no doubt, but I don't want to address this. Many others have already done so and far better than I could. (Anya deserves the world and fuck Jimmy) Curly has been put in such a shit situation that no one could have probably "fixed" this situation, let alone properly prevent it. Consider these facts. -Curly knew Jimmy for a while and had faith in him. Wanted to help him, since he is at his heart, a good man. -Curly has sleep issues. The Company only allows 5 hours of sleep. Combine these two facts: Curly only sleeps around 3 to 4 hours probably. This is where you basically destroy yourself mentally and physically with so little sleep. Curly is going through his own crisis. Feeling unfulfilled with his position as a "good and responsible" captain and thinking about jumping ship after this job. -Jimmy is a manipulative narcissists. He shows clear envy of Curly and his position, his authority and "responsibility". Jimmy feels entitled to Curly's position, but Curly doesn't realize that. He is too blinded by his friendship with him. -Jimmy seemingly also is motivated by "ruining" Curly. Curly, the good pilot. Curly, with the perfect track record. I think this is also showcased by how Jimmy basically does not consciously acknowledge his horrific actions against Anya. His subconscious tries to confront him, but it is so warped that he is still incapable of recognizing it. -Jimmy seemingly is obsessed with Curly in an unhealthy way and the company they work for seems to dislike any "drama" between employees and as captain, who is responsible for them, it would obviously leave a mark on the "perfect captain". Curly's own good nature couldn't stand a chance against the manipulative, entitled and obsessive Jimmy. Only when Jimmy did something so extreme that it would also clearly backfire on himself as well, does he go to even further extremes to cover-up his mistakes. His beginning of "taking responsibility" starts with running away from it by crashing the ship and then pushing the blame (dodging it again) on a crippled Curly. Curly is not perfect, but who is when you are barely getting 5 hours of sleep, have a midlife crisis and your (best?) friend, who you wanted to help get his life back on track, has been exposed as a rapist. And now rapist and victim are stuck on the ship for the next 8 months. The victim is pregnant and will most likely give birth. tensions are rising. Sleep deprivation, your best friend a rapist, female crew-member pregnant, midlife crisis. All these issues taking up space in a mind that doesn't have the energy to handle it all, yet you try. you try to "fix" it. You see that your "friend" is becoming erratic, so you try to calm the situation. The victim is so distraught she hides the only firearm from everyone, afraid of her victimizer, And unbeknownst to you, your friend is in the process of dooming you all, yet you still try to take responsibility. And you pay for it. no feet. no hands, no lips, only one forever-opened eye to witness as your crew dies one by one. And why? Because you failed to take care of the situation. You failed to punish Jimmy, Failed to protect Anya. You can't even apologize to the women you failed, who is tending to your wounds and agony. Being Curly in this situation as captain is a nightmare. Curly is not perfect, Curly is not evil. Curly tried to take responsibility. He tried, but the situation was rigged against him from the start. Thanks Jimmy, you fucking twat.
