I kinda stopped playing TF2 when hats with effects were introduced and every public server was 24v24 or something like that. But he definitely has a point. I enjoyed TF2 more but I think you really need to be in a clan to be able to enjoy TF2 nowadays.

I wouldn't blame B4nny for not figuring out how to describe OW. I feel like OW was trying to be multiple things at once without committing to any of these things. There's no explicit MOBA elements, no explicit arena shooter elements, and no explicit anything. It's just Halloween mode with blizzard paint on top.

i liked OW1 once i discovered Ana, the ability to be a hybrid damage dealer/healer with utility and real crowd control, AND be flashy/clutch at the same time was very refreshing. despite that, i agree that it feels like playing against wrangler/vaccinator all the time. i don't know that TF2 is "better", but i prefer to play it over OW2. That said, id never touch TF2 comp, whereas i used to enjoy playing ranked in OW1.

What does it for me is this: In Overwatch, to decide what character you're gonna play, you have to look at what your enemy is playing and what your teammates are playing. To win in Overwatch, you just have to be a slave because if you're not, you get hardcountered and you lose. In TF2, when you wanna decide what class you wanna play, you just decide what class you wanna play. You can play anything and still dominate, you just need to be good at the game. The only decision is playstyle.

As somone who just got into overwatch. Im enjoying it a lot, but he is right. The map design is trash, and the game modes aren't great. Blizzard needs to choose one gamemode to focus on for competitive.

I completely agree. I didn't even touch OW ever. It was immediately obvious to me that OW was just Blizzard's yet another unoriginal way of trying to capitalize on someone else's model (TF2), but by merging with the MOBA model. And then it was also way too full of sfx on the screen. OW is way too visually noisy for me. I think the characters aren't badly designed, but they're not anywhere near as interesting as TF2 characters, who are all complete psychopaths, each in their own comedic way. Been saying it since the beginning: TF2 > OW.

More than anything, I stand by the distinction that TF2 is a shooter built predominantly about what is/sounds fun and casual, and Overwatch is built around what is/sounds like an E-Sport. In TF2, you pick whatever class and weapons you want, and you get out of it whatever that experience and the time invested means to you. The game was invented in an era before mmr, tracking performance (stranges aside) between games, and treating a game like a job became the e-sport enterprise we know today. Overwatch was founded with that enterprise in mind, and developed more and more to fit that competitive e-sports mold as it developed. The roles in Overwatch are like jobs you are expected to perform with relative competency, and if your average player does anything other than their scripted role, their team is going to be noticeably disadvantaged. Overwatch’s design, like mobas, frames that “casual player disadvantage” in an unfun light because the game’s rigid competitive nature makes it a huge pain in the ass to bridge the skill game with, say, an “incompetent” healer as a DPS or tank. Somebody “isn’t doing their job” so you “can’t do yours.” The games are philosophically diametrically opposed. There’s more I could add, but I think you get the idea. Thanks for reading.

Overwatch 2 has literally 100x more humans than TF2 has bots+humans and isn't an abandoned husk that was, even its prime, only used as a testing ground for Valve's monetization theses. b4nny always seethed at how OW exposed him as a one-trick. I've never been good at either game, but I've played both OW1 and TF2 extensively. I had a great time with Overwatch. I particularly stomped at Lucioball in Summer Games, but I was kind of over OW shortly after Sigma came out. I remember being excited for the announcement of OW2, only for that excitement to naturally wane as time progressed. I'd already gone back to TF2 and haven't touched Overwatch since probably 2019. As easy as it is to compare OW and TF2, both games look and feel absolutely different; Aesthetically, mechanically, fundamentally different. I share the opinion of many when I say OW was definitely something fresh, but after a couple of years it lost its luster and gameplay overall became stiffer and stiffer. It didn't have the staying power that TF2 continues to have despite its flaws.

Maybe he needs to realize this: not everyone in the 2020s is still attached to a game that came out in 2007. Sometimes, it is better the devil you know than the one you don't, but sometimes it doesn't.

Every criticism of OW vs TF2 in this game boils down to "Overwatch is different than TF2, so I dont like it." How boring to only want the same thing out of every game.
