one thing i noticed about the graph of x^4 -x^2 is that it is an even function with symmetry, meaning root alpha will have another root of -alpha so you can basically just do it from there.

the equation has no solution. if y is independent, and x dependent, y and x can be any number. ie undefined.

Alternatively you could solve for 2 cases which I think would be a little bit faster in a situation like this. i.e. case 1: solve for x=0. In this case you get the identity 0=0 which means if x is 0 then y can be anything. case 2: solve for x not equal to 0. In that case you CAN divide by x and get y=5 which means if y is 5 then x can be anything

Imagine the plane is horizontal and P is the top of a really tall building. The line L could just be an electricity line near the ground. If I draw a straight line from the top of the building to the closest point on the electricity line, does that line make a 90 degree angle with the building? No it makes a very acute angle. But it DOES make a 90 degree angle with the electricity line. You’ve interpreted as “P is the point vertically above Q that is closest to the line L” But the question actually states “R is the point on L closest to P”
