Agree that it's more than martial arts. But I think it's Mr Cheng Yi's understanding of the concept of chivalry martial arts and his superb performance that makes the drama unforgettable. I would venture to say that you could have another similar drama and it would not be this popular.
I agree with the author. His eyes can talk and he is extremely good at secondary creation of the characters he plays. I personally believe that what sets him apart is that he really becomes the characters he plays, not trying hard to act. If people there don't think Mr Cheng Yi is good looking, then I guess there are no good looking actors in his entertainment circle. I looked at the pictures of all the ones who were said to be good looking and couldn't tell any difference among them, simply different types.

Maybe someone could tell me how people in his entertainment circle define "Cong Ming". Is it the ability to play all types of games? If that's the case, I can tell you that those investors, some of the smartest scientists, some famous musicians all seem to play these types of games poorly. So many words in English but they don't mean exactly the same thing: street smart, book smart, clever, sharp, intelligent etc. Therefore, Mr Cheng Yi doesn't act smart or is not street smart, but he is extremely intelligent, sharp, observant and insightful. Otherwise, he can't be such a superb actor with unique insights of the characters he plays. I personally believe that it's his powerful secondary creation of the characters he plays that makes his characters, especially Li Lianhua so unforgettable.
As for appearance, I think just as books or dramas, we all have our types. That's why it's hard to have an agreement on looks. New fresh faces will eventually replace the previous favorite ones. I suspect that is what is going on with the constant changing of rankings of actors in his entertainment circle. What is unique about Mr Cheng Yi is his inner beauty and purity. When the beauty is from within, it is different. He is the adorable type. I think that might be why the more you look at him, the more handsome he seems to be.

Good video. As someone who seldom watched dramas or even saw movies in the past, I think I am destined to discover Mr Cheng Yi. I mainly like books or dramas such as Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility types. So I know when I comment on dramas I might be biased because most of them are not my type. However, regardless of the type of dramas, Mr Cheng Yi played all of the characters so well that I actually watched them (granted I may skip some parts, especially too violent or too much blood parts). The beauty with his performances is that he actually doesn't try hard to act. His superb acting skill is certainly a big plus, but he also has always injected into the roles he plays his own insights (which make the characters unforgettable). Furthermore, I don't get the feeling that he is acting when watching his dramas. He does seem to become the roles he played as he said in his interviews. I can't rank his performances. To me, he plays Xiao Cheng Xu in the Promise of Chang An, Yun Hongshen in Deep Lurk and others just as superbly as Li Lianhua in Mysterious Lotus Casebook. I actually watched Deep Lurk more times than Mysterious Lotus Casebook. That's because I like dramas that end with my heroes alive and healthy. But frankly I watched both of them many times.
Well said, author. I look forward to watching Go to the Mountains and Sea. I think it'll be a fantastic drama with Mr Cheng Yi having so many parts in the drama. Another selling point is that I know the drama will end with the character he plays alive and healthy. I am hoping that he will play another male lead in a new contemporary drama this year. I very much enjoyed the three characters he played in the contemporary dramas even though they were before he is as well-known as he is now.

Totally agree with the author. He was already an outstanding actor in his twenties and so versatile to boot. I also highly recommend Stand by Me. Mr Cheng Yi portrayed Qi Yan to perfection. With his beautiful face and the vivid rendering of the complex character, it makes me want to watch it again and again. Unfortunately, the drama is not my type, but I do want to appreciate his superb performance. In the end, I have to speed up other parts and only watch his parts and suffering the melodramatic scenes. Then I rewatched the first 20 episodes again with the same viewing method. I simply can't bring myself to watch the rest of the episodes again (too many unnecessary over-fabricated, complicated, melodramatic scenes to stomach. As if that's not enough, the author ended the drama with Qi Yan dead. It boggles my mind why some authors in his entertainment circle seem to think that heroic male leads must die in the end. Is this their way to send positive messages or attract viewers? I personally like the ending of Deep Lurk.
