But realistically, would a hydrogen vapor cloud actually stay together long enough to ignite, considering it would rise into the air and rapidly disperse beyond the LEL? Hydrogen is so much lighter than air I believe most of the time a vapor cloud would not reach the right conditions to explode. Try the same experiment without the plastic sheeting to hold in the hydrogen.

It is a common misconception that hydrogen releases simply “float away”. BakerRisk addressed this question back in 2014 with a paper titled “Are unconfined hydrogen explosions credible”. You can find the BakerRisk paper here: doi.org/10.1002/prs.11685

Had something similar happen at our house once. I'd gone to sleep and the missus was sitting up reading a book and having a butt when I cut a good'r and... WOOF!.... Up go the sheets! Scared the shit outta her but I never even flinched.

This is a very good example why we should not light our own flatulence.

It's tough to pull this off. But naturally it happens around the world a couple of times per year. It explodes instead of burning. Strange phenomenon.

It’s a deflagration, not an explosion. The vc burns quickly from the point of ignition, but never detonates or explodes in this case

Hey there bud, I have a challenge for you if you're up for it. there is a place in kyrgyzstan mountains some people suspect could be a metal wall in between a mountain pass while others think its just the mountain, would you be interested in confirming if it's truly a metal wall to seal an opening in the mountain? you might have to bring a bunch of gear, including metal detectors and explosives? If you choose to do it, you can title your video, testing if this is the wall of gog and magog. you'll get loads of viewers. so you'll win too.

That is not an explosion, that is just combustion of used fuel, explosion would be much faster in it's reaction speed.

That is an explosion, but a type called deflagration. Another type is detonation.

I don't really see much difference in the structures except for size perhaps the right one appears smaller. The video and description is not really clarifying the perimeters and objectives of the test. The left one seems overly rich, as opposed to the right which seems to exhibit a more of a stoichiometric balance. The piping, or congestion you mentioned is not well defined in the video or an explanation of why it contributes to a much higher rate of deflagration.
@MrSunrise-
@MrSunrise- Жыл бұрын
I can see the pipes - looks like about 50 of them. The turbulence created as the fuel-air mixture is forced past them accelerates the deflagration-to-detonation transition. The effect of piping on vapor cloud explosions has been long known, but I don't know that it has be quantified - which looks to be what they are doing here.
@Master-Disaster
@Master-Disaster 8 ай бұрын
@@MrSunrise- There were empirical models that have quantified it built from lots of testing at the British Gas Research site in Spadeadam, England, after the Piper Alpha disaster. It used full size mock-ups of offshore modules with piping etc. When I get a chance I will dig out one of the videos and post it.
