Wow Sir a lovely layout. I agree with you N Gauge is superb. I had N Gauge for 35 years then 0Gauge for 10 years . 00 Gauge for several years now at 67 I have N Gauge. I have built most of the Metcalfe Kits . I have four trains running around two different levels. 8 feet by 3 Feet. So far it's fine my fingers can still work properly. I always use Peco track hardly ever had a derailment. Best wishes Richard Canterbury kent.

Hi, Lewis. A footbridge is needed. Also, I would suggest that you 'lose' the signal box as your station looks like it wouldn't have one nowadays and probably would be unmanned. The goods yard would probably have been closed between 1964 and 1970, so the small workshop type business would 'fit in'. Is your layout based very loosely on the Camborne/Redruth/Scorrier/Chasewater area? If so, you could try to create a backscene incorporating a few more engine houses. Anywhere you look 'down west' there's plenty to choose from. Looking at the beach, it don't look like Gyllingvase, but as you say, it looks 'right'. Keep up the good work, boy!! 'An exiled Kernowik'

I have considered loosing the signal box as it doesn’t fit in at all. But it could be unmanned and unused. They layout has changed from its original design and is much simpler but thought backstories on how it once was or at least planned in my mind when it was going to be set in the 80s. Old layout was more clay country where as this one is more to the north but west suites well. Thank you for your suggestion. A back scene would work really well! I have considered painting one.

Hi Lewis. Any hobby is always a learning curve. The beauty of the YT videos like yours is that others can learn from your mistakes (as well as their own!). My case in point is your worries about a footbridge. Ideally a modeller would take into account the potential need to install a footbridge when deciding what distance to place adjacent platforms. Another point is how wide to make you platforms to allow for space for structures such as shelters, etc., to permit passengers to pass by.

Unfortunately loads of mistakes have already been made. Being new to n it’s hard to judge at times how things will fill the space. But if I’m honest I still enjoy it the same. The next layout will be better I’m sure.

Hello Lewis 👋 It is definitely worth having these videos to remember how much things change over time 👌 The beach ⛱️ looks very natural 😍 especially your clay rocks 🪨 Woodland Scenics won't look any better 😇 I've used a "acrylic mirror" 🪞 as a "backscene' to make my beach look longer than it is 🤫 its especially effective when doing videos of running sessions 👍 I do agree about using plaster for the roads ✌️ it makes them more rustic 😲 than card sheets 😉 Painted sandpaper is also worth trying out 👍 Very best wishes for the future of your layout from the Emerald Isle ☘️

Just discovered your channel. I am a long standing N gauge modeller. It's a great gauge and with advances in technology the models are marvels of engineering and electronics. Everyone has their own reasons and derives their own enjoyment from the hobby. Like any hobby you make it and take from it what you will. The only rules are your rules, no one else's. There are fantastic examples in N gauge on KZbin from dioramas and shelf layouts to room and shed fillers! They all have a place in our hobby. Well done!

Thank you, i agree. We dont have to please anybody else but ourselves. I am planning a bigger layout but at the same also considering a micro one. Both will give me alot of satisfaction. I'm glad N gauge has advanced. The detail is great and I've been looking into the possibility of DCC with the next layout. All very exciting. Thank you for your comment! :):)

The thing I love about N gauge is that you can run full length trains in a relatively small space. I have a 2 metre by 950mm Japanese layout that allows me to run 8 car bullet trains, which are the correct number of cars for the area I am modelling. I also have a yard within the double track loop that lets me store 8 correct length ordinary trains ready for use when I want them. The other good thing about modelling Japanese n gauge trains is the huge amount of rolling stock available! We think of Britain being train mad but we pale into insignificance compared to Japan! One obvious example is that since the bullet trains started running in 1964 they have produced 18 different bullet train designs! We've had how many? 5 or 6?

I had no idea Japan had a huge following for the hobby. I knew about kato with their selection of trains and buildings they do. But that was about it. I enjoy that about N gauge too. I would like a bigger layout ( who doesnt lol) but even with mine i can run longer trains and more realistic formations than i could previously. It sounds like with your layout your able to fit alot of track in that space which is really good. I kept mine simple but wish i added more track for interest. Thank you for commenting!

N gauge is awesome :) A word of caution on the availability though: you might just be coincidentally coming into this whilst there's some decent modern-day GWR stuff around. I've been keeping an eye on things closely for the last 5-or-so years, and I think it can be many years between runs of models or liveries, and it can be hard to get them second-hand. My advice is that if you can reasonably afford something now, then get it, and sell it if you hit hard times later. Sometimes this approach can be difficult to get spouse agreement on, though ;) Your layout is looking nice so far, by the way - I like the scenery you're building and the colours in it

Thank you so much for the comments on the scenery. I hope it reflects cornwall well. Yes i have to agree with you. It is rather annoying how you see a new release and feel you have to go for it there and then. Else you wont get it. I did this with the 800 and castle set. Looking on ebay recently and the previous release of the 43 is up£300. The 57 was second hand but i knew who had one and where to get it. Else would not have found it. But cost me brand new price (although it is as new). I'm lucky that i feel the railway can "operate" with what its running now. Well see how it all goes over this year. Thank you very much and looking forward to speaking with you again 😃

N scale/gauge is great for fitting a lot into a small space. My layout is 4 foot x 2.5 foot. In that space I have 2 loops with 2.5 sidings. Perfect. The track cleaning when I don't run it often enough can be a pain, but it's a great space saver. Tri-ang TT is another great space saver if you're prepared to work with steel track. Happy Modelling. This is what I love about n gauge. Sounds like you’ve got plenty going on there. It was a 4x2 board that inspired me. A video here on KZbin with a loop and some sidings. A class 37 shunting. Can fit so much in that space without having running issues with the curves. I have thought about 4x2 for storage. Thank you for your comment.

I, too, have restricted space at home so can't have my ideal layout with continuous runs and gentle curves. As a member of the local club (under 3 miles distant fortunately) I can access their set up to allow my locos to "stretch their legs" and just watch trains rolling past. For home use I have built an end-to-end with 4.5 metres of run which does take a few seconds at scale speed. You have made some lovely scenes on your layout and I think it's important you develop your undoubted skills further. If you don't have a local club in reach why not consider building a fiddle yard or sector plate and construct one or two small layouts that can fit onto it in modular fashion? One could be rural, one industrial, one military...the potential is amazing. As mentioned by others, the tight curves really mean you may need to choose appropriate stock like 4 wheel carriages and small tank engines. For me seeing mainline stock negotiating 1st or 2nd radius curves is too toy-like, although others will disagree. Good luck, Lewis.

Thank you for your nice feedback on my layouts. It's nice to hear others like it. I don't have a club near by that i know of and thats the reason i use youtube. To share my progress/layout with others and to see other peoples. It would be great to visit others/clubs for socialising. Learnings skills and like you say get to see your own trains run properly. I did consider a modular layout because then you can literally make a new railway by swapping the scenes around everytime. Thanks very much for your comment 😃

Really good scenery. Smaller gauge would definitely be a good move. Personally I have O gauge in the garden, but fancy the TT120 for a fun indoor layout. Having seen some TT rolling stock at Warley, I'd definitely plump for TT over N assuming this is a fresh start (no investment in N already). TT is just that crucial bit bigger than N (25%) and the Peco track looks really good, too. Good luck with whatever you decide 👍

This is the first time I've seen your layout. May I suggest you look at it a slightly different way. What you've done in this size is great. Growing up in Plymouth i like the clay base. I believe the main problem is what you are trying to run. What I mean is if you ran small steam locos...eg Bachmann 060 pannier tank with small open clay wagons and 4 wheel coaches or a single auto coach then it would look far more lifelike. To run full length express trains you need an enormous layout in any scale. As for point motors there is always a way to install. Either with under board or above board types...even if you mount them away from the point using a longer rod. They can then be hidden under buildings. You can also add lighting for extra interest. The problem with N gauge is they are OK with mainline trains chasing round a loop, but not so good with small locos and shunting. Good luck mate. Gary

Thank you for your comments. I completely agree as i will admit i did want longer trains as that is what i like. I decided on the location as longer trains did travel up the branch. But there are plenty of small layouts with smaller trains that have so much character. I should have modeled that. But i must admit i was pleased with what i had built.

Hi Lewis, thanks for sharing your video, we all been there with our model railways , I know I have. It's a learning curve, and you learn as you go along from comments made from social media platforms or like your KZbin channel when one leaves comments or suggestions. If you start again , stick with oo gauge making the boards slightly bigger get two 6 x2 ft put them side by side will give you a 6 x 4 board. Use peco track as more range with points. I would suggest DCC setup , I went over to the darkside back in 2008 as DC operators used to call it. But I wouldn't go back , Gaugemaster or NCE I recommend. As other comments have draw up a track plan or look on Google for idea's. All the best John 👍🏼

You have done a great job with the layout especially with the space available. I too have a “small” layout although it is about 10x9 and like yourself, would like it to be larger. Moving to N gauge would dolce your issue with space and it would motivate you to get going. My layout is DC and that is because I started buying trains just before DCC came around , now I think I am too far in and it would cost too much to convert my locos or sell everything I have and start again. I just like running trains and working on building models to enhance tge layout etc. So I think you are in a good place to make a change in your life. Make a plan and a decision then move forward and don’t look back. Good luck

You have built a good layout but, being so small, it is only ever going to be suitable for short locos and stock. It would be ideal for a bygone age, no bogie stock, small tank locos and 4- and 6- wheel coaches. Make your tunnel longer, to take a full train, and use that to represent the remainder of British Railways, this would help you to devise several different timetables and make operation more interesting. Plus, you still have an oval to indulge in a little tail-chasing when the urge takes you! As it happens, I currently use N gauge but find it no easier to achieve total satisfaction even opting for terminus to fiddle yard format. For your current board size, I can only refer you to "Havant Aclew" elsewhere on Utube to demonstrate what is possible in 00. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
