The funny thing about the shoe drop is because it's true. If there are cats, howling and yowling outside your house, and you throw something to make them shut up, they will get startled for a second, making you think you've got some peace and quiet now, but then they start right up again.

I was 26 when the original film came out. 😅 Munkustrap though, hot damn, made me wish I was a cat. 😉 Just want to make clear that I'm talking about 98 Munkustrap & not that thing from the cgi piece of garbage.

I think i read something about cats spreading their scent through touch, which is why when they love you they will be affectionate towards you. The difference in that scene with Grizabella is that Victoria touched her, spreading her scent to her and claiming her as part of the group. That's how i saw it anyway.

One big qualm i have with the movie is the inclusion of Taylor Swift. Taylor can make a song and she can do a bop but she can't craft a cohesive musical experience, just look at her albums. If it was somebody like the O'Connell siblings (Billie and Finneas) who can really take you on a journey within an album... They could have pulled it off seamlessly, but I feel like Taylor just wanted to take a swing at some awards and forced herself into this and forced all these changes and made it a vanity project from what I've gathered. In fact it feels like a lot of the celebrities in the movie adaptation just kind of did whatever they wanted. Like itvwas about money and vanity for everyone involved.

Hi Joel. I played Alonzo in the '98 Cats movie. This is the first time I've come across your Cats commentary. It was fascinating to hear your take on it and often hilarious. Love your passion for a show that I am proud to have been chosen to be in the definitive cast that preserved Gillian Lynne's astoundingly genius choreography. She created the physical language of the production and is what sets it apart from any other show ever created. There is no comparison. To explain the ending, Grizabella was selected to get reborn and come back to a different Jellicle life. Cats as we all know, have 9 lives and firmly believe in reincarnation. She was reincarnated. She enters the Heaviside Layer which is real. It's where the limit for radio waves transmit in the atmosphere around Earth. Hope this adds clarity. Thank you for sharing your love for Cats with us all. 🙏💜

I always loved the musical and i loved the movie too, so i got a little confused about all the trashing. Obviously, you can see all the mistakes of the movie, but I still had a great time watching it. It's clearly a different concept though.

The 1998 Cats was the best cast, costume, and makeup. Yeah its missing some bits other performances but to me it doesn't hurt it. That cgi thing was gross.

The musical is awesome the movie is very not awesome. Even when you close your eyes to get away from the weird CGI, some of the songs are a world of no. The only song I liked in the movie was Jennifer's rendition of 'Memory'.

The problems fans have with the 2019 Cats film are the same problems denied by fans of the theatrical 1998 film and as such the stage version. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

I was so super blessed to see this play at the winter garden during its original run in 1983. First row loge (best seats!!). They had some of the kittys climb the first balcony and one of them swiped at me. It was so magical.

1:58 - It's strange that he would say that, because in the musical itself, it's made fairly clear (at least to me) that Jellicle cats are a special kind of cat. Being far smaller than the average cat is one special trait mentioned, and showcased several times, as we see them wearing shoes on their heads and carrying spoons large enough to use as canes. We also know they have magical powers, as Mr.Mistofelees demonstrates several times, the twins are also canonically psychic, and Macavity is also shown to have strange magical powers, as is TGRC (Granted, Rumpus Cat might be fictional, but they tell the story as though it's a factual historical tale). 3:02 - Highly disappointed you didn't mention Munkustrap here. He acts as our narrator for at least half of the songs, he's the one who brings everyone together after they scatter for any reason, he literally fights Macavity 1 on 1 with his bare claws (he loses, but it's the attempt that counts), and he's sasses a demon cat to his face. He's also literally Old Deut's son and probably next in line to lead the cats. 8:09 - I always thought it was kinda funny. 8:15 - The joke is that they're yowling cats. 12:49 - I always interpretted this as her going to a groomer and getting all her matted fur shaved off, revealing her vibrant undercoat and giving her a new burst of energy and youthful feeling. If you look at a dog or cat that's recently gotten an emergency shave, they often have lines marking the edge of the razor, and that's kind of what her fringes look like to me. And now that all that thick, heavy, drab matted fur is off, she's full of energy and is happy and able to move.

As someone who starred in the stage show Cats, Me & my dance buddies were sorely disappointed with the CGI remake. The problem they made is they tried to focus on a small group & the rest were just background. All the performers had a name, a character, a purpose & on this film they forgot about the majority. Plus they changed the gender of old Deuteronony, they made Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer bad instead of mischievous, they removed songs & added others (although the 1998 version also did that.) But the main problem is they just removed a lot of characters, they just forgot about them. Electra, Alonzo, Tantomile, Coricopat, Etcetera, Pouncivil, Plato, Tumblebrutus to name but a view.

2019 Cats = creepy

I have been watching the original Cats movie since I was a wee lad..and now, as a 29-year-old woman, I forced my boyfriend to watch it for the first time last week. I think it has explained a lot of my behaviors during our 10-year relationship xD I'm honest, I probably will never watch the modern-day rendition of the musical, this video is probably as far as I'll dip my toes into that movie.

Judi Dench was initially cast as Grizabella in the original West End production but had to bow out and they cast Elaine Page in her stead. I think they cast her in the film as a nod to that.

I'm 15 minutes in-- John Partridge is a legend. He first started playing Tugger at age 17 in the West End Production after being found by Andrew Lloyd Webber and was so perfect I'm convinced that's why they had him reprise it for the film. He also can walk and dance better in heels than most women I know.

I first watched the 2019 version first and I just started watching the 1998 version and 1998 version is better

Tugger and Misto are my favorites! One of my favorite things about Tugger's costuming is that he's the only one wearing sneakers, which makes him look 'bigger' (especially in combination with the mane). It adds to his presence.

I won’t watch an hour and a half long movie, but I’ll watch an hour and a half long review.

The problem was werent the special effects. It’s the film is dull and lacks energy.

This is 4 year past the point but the cat wearing a "jacket" its representing how some cats are lazy and sleep all day but at tonight they get a big boost of energy. She takes off the jacket as shedding her laziness

@Joel Tempero I think Grizabella is a outcast because she fell from her grace. She’s old and dingy, while the rest are young and youthful. It was also rumored that she was a sex worker from what I heard. Which might be why she always looks so sick and weak.

"I'm looking forward to Skimbleshanks in this movie, I think it's gonna do well, because I don't know who it is." An lo and behold Skimbleshanks' song is the only good one is the movie.

I owned the VHS as a teenager and my parents did take issue with the movie, saying it was too sexual. Which I rolled my eyes at, especially since the actors and actresses were fully clothed. I kind of get it now, but I also grow up in a more conservative Christian home. Admittedly though... Rum Tum Tugger is my favorite character and I did love his number. But it was more just because I found him to be a blast to watch, not so much that he was made to be like this attractive sex god among cats, with that rock star vibe. If that makes sense? Doing his thing, not caring what others think of him. Confidant, mischievous, bold, and the amusing silliness of wanting the opposite of what he is given.

I had the pleasure of seeing a stage performance of Cats in person! Toured to Playhouse Square. One of the best productions I’ve seen! They took Mr. Mistoffelees a huge step higher- his sparkily fur had rainbow lights on it as well as the lights surrounding the stage and junkyard set. It was amazing! Also, during intermission Old Deuteronomy sat in his spot the whole time, and you could see him occasionally clean himself. It was fun.
