I would've thought they could follow the catch all the way through without palm waving. I figured I wasn't strong enough so I've been swimming with closed fists. Open palm catch to a punch drag.

Phelps, on his right arm (in this video) has a bit of an "S" stroke, sort-ta like we were taught...50 yrs ago. (Spitz)

His arms slide a bit under his chest. In his slow swim videos you can see his arm fully under the chest. Every person shall swim the most efficient way for THIS person. Common ways they teach are just the base for developing your style.

Huge difference between the arm pull in the 50 meter and 1500 meter techniques. With 50 meter sprint, straight arm pull, straight arm recover. With 1500, bent arm pull, bent arm recover. The elite swimmers pretty much all use straight arm pull and recover for last 5 to 10 meters.

I think it’s important to point out that you almost never see straight arm catch being used successfully beyond the 50. Even in the 100 straight arm catchers tend to get decimated in the last 30m by higher catch techniques. This is a large reason why Kyle charmers swims over the top of Dressel repeatedly. High elbow catch has won almost every distance medal since Thorpe. Just look at ledecky, Hackett, Phelps, etc and you’ll see this in action.
