As an owner of 90s 700, 800, 900 and V70 series Volvos vehicles since 2000 I would say that I have only noticed significant deterioration of my current 850 and V70 in the last 2 years, which coincides with their being driven much more than before. So I agree Robert daily driving takes a toll and unless you want to pay more than you ever wanted to to your mechanic you need to do at least some of the work yourself, if not repairs to core mechanical functions then at least stuff like replacing headlights and batteries, simple trim work, replace fan blower motor, detailing, oil changes, wiper pumps, etc etc basically all the niggly things that are the difference between driving a beater and driving a first-rate Volvo.

Almost all new vehicles newer than 10 years are disposable short life vehicles designed to fail at 150k miles and are 2x more costly to maintain.

That’s a good point. But older cars break and if you don't fix them yourself, you better have a good checkbook. 🤑

It's interesting that the ground wire from the battery is grounded to the body (under / in front of the battery), on the subframe and on the transmission...but not onto the actual engine itself).

Robert, tough question for ya. How long realistically do you think we will still be able to daily drive the p80 / 850 cars … I recently had my heater fan pack up. Had to order one, wanted genuine Volvo. That cost me £280 and had to get it sent from Germany to the uk! You don’t see many people daily driving the 240s these days. How long do you think we’ll be able to afford to keep these 850s daily drivable with parts becoming more rare/expesive. I’m guessing you guys in the us will be able to keep them serviceable longer than us in the uk !

Plastic pcv valves can shrink in 5 years or so. They can suck air around it. They can stick or leak thru. My replacements are metal and spray cleaned yearly. Sludge from air moisture is common. 3000 mile oil changes even with synthetic oil and purolator one or Boss keeps the sludge away! Gentle warmup and a good highway drive and back to a gentle drive to park gives me sticker level miles per gallon or above!

I had a shop charge my dad 800 dollars to replace the idler pulley, belt tensioner, and serpentine belt on his 2012 xc90 3.2. They split the ac line and over charged it by 100 pounds and the ac wouldn't work. I recently did the same job on my friend's xc90 and I didn't have to split the ac and it was NOT 6 hours of billable work
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 2 күн бұрын
That is outrageous. Sad that some shops are so expensive. It's very common for them to charge $130+ for my just a serpentine belt replacement. Add a couple of pulleys, and a $300 AC service and your at $800. It's hard to get out of a shop for under $1000 these days.

Great content! Big fan! I bought my first car (S70) in april this year, (soon gonna be last year 😂) and I totally love it! Such a well build vehicle with a lot of luxury and mindful functions. Mine is a 2.5 SE model from 98. It is in a good condition but my only issue is the handbrake at this moment. Handbrake works on the right axle but not left. I already ordered fresh parts like new brake shoes, now I just have to find out if worn components are the issue. Do you have any experience with handbrake issues and if so is there any advice you could give? Like what I should keep in mind or definitely do. Thanks a lot already for all your helpful videos. Happy new year! Greetings from the Volvo country, Sweden 🇸🇪

The OEM Volvo waterpump is $225 with shipping from IPD. The aftermarket water pump is $30 including ship. There's another brand called Graf for about $70 including ship. Is it really worth it to get the OEM? Not a lot of money to some people but it is to me. ☹️
