Cut my teeth surfing Ocean Beach in SF … many many bad drubbings in those dark cold waters but the worst I ever had was a big winter day at Blacks … pinned to the bottom, leash wrapped around my ankles and board similarly held down. Thought that was the end but then pressure released board and I was pulled feet first to the surface … untangled myself somehow and made it to beach. I’ll never forget how dang beautiful the waves rolling over me looked as I stared helplessly up from the bottom.

its always fun when the water has so much air in it that you sink all the way to the bottom and you can just stand there hoping you dont step on an urchin and you open your eyes and its white in every direction and you ask yourself if this is how it all ends
