@bonnie4486 жыл бұрын
By the way, he explains that he is trying to teach the horse that a cluck and a touch of the whip means a cluck is as good as a whip. Then he does the on the repeat with the touch of a spur. This is not abuse, it is a way of teaching association of the cluck to something stronger. Then you don't need the whip or the spur, you can use a cluck. It is a shame the audio is so bad.
@NeemaAndGame6 жыл бұрын
Why the whip? It only makes a horse more nervous about approaching the jump. You can only use the whip as a help to guide the horse, not as a punishment for doing what horses normally do - spook at new thing. Why not use your voice and assure the horse there is nothing to be afraid? Yeah it may take a little longer than just forcing the horse but it will give them lots of confidence and help with their fear.

I have A very spooky horse and understands the frustration and never used a crop but ik lets use a crop on a horse What is already nervy of the whole situation and scare them even more hate rider like that it can sometimes take me days of hard work to take my horse over a pole bu5 the next day she fine hitter and scaring the. So this proves it doesn't matter what you've accomplished, how many titles you've won, if you don't understand horses which he obviously doesn't than your useless in helping others develop a confident jumping horse. I would never learn from this guy. He doesn't understand horses at all. He's an idiot.

I don't care if this is George Morris, this is terrible!! I can see taking the horses up to the jump and letting them check it out...but most of those horses were totally fine with the actual jump until they were whacked with the crop, then they thought it was something scary. The crop should have only been used if they refused. The horses were doing exactly what they were told, walk to the jump, and stand there, yet were still punished for the correct response.
@nsequestrian7 жыл бұрын
I'm reading these comments and all I've seen are people who seem to be unaware with how to properly use a crop. If you are against the use of all crops/whips then fine, but don't be mad when other people use it. When these people in the video are using their stick they aren't whacking their horse, they are giving them a tap. I'm pretty sure if someone hit you with a stick just as hard as these people hit their horses, you would see just how "painful" it is.
@horsefan19417 жыл бұрын
My favorite horse rider on KZbin(Raleigh), would probably hate this 0.0. She believes crops are abusive to horses. Cause she says it's a myth that horse skin is thick, and it won't hurt to hit it with a crop. It actually hurts them which why they react. Like I then saw her expirement it on a person, and they screamed when they got hit. Yep, if you feel the pain, so does the horse. Which why I get scared using a crop on the horse I ride now, but I have no choice when get told to do so by my trainer, cause he(the horse ride) can be sassy. Otherwise I try using leg aids for him, if he doesn't listen to any cues, then I'll try to tap him gently. And I noticed the horse I ride kicks up/sometimes bucks when tapped(for he don't like it), and I understand that.
@horsefan19417 жыл бұрын
Apparently with horses/ponies that refuse jumps at my barn they do the same thing, tap them with the crop till they listen. A few sassy horses I noticed bucked, and reared up when they got tapped and made to go to the jump again.
@nsequestrian7 жыл бұрын
I'm going to let you know something, I am a human being and the amount of times I've been hit with a crop probably is a lot more than any horse i've ridden. The trick is to tap gently so that they feel it but don't go bat sh*t crazy with it. The crop is an aide alongside your leg and seat.

If anyone wants to know how to get a horse over a jump without making it scared of the jump, I can give you a list of trainers who know exactly how to do that without ever hitting the horse. I can't believe that anyone who actually even remotely likes horses, never mind loves them would want to do this to a horse when it's totally unnecessary. I guess this kind of riding is for people who use other beings for their own pleasure without regard to their feelings. There's a word for that and people who do it.

I feel as though in this case it is very difficult to tell what exactly the point of the exercise is. You see riders approach the liverpool stop, use the crop, then circle at the trot and jump it. It's hard to tell exactly what he is saying because the video quality is not the best. What is believed to be the point of the exercise is to be about teaching young horses to approach a scary jump, and not look at said jump, just to jump it. However a lot of questions come into play, for example, is this specifically designed for a liverpool? Is this to train young horses to use power and engage over the jump or just to get over the fear? These questions are not just answered by just watching and listening to this video. We know that every horse is different and that George Morris is an older gentlemen and therefore refers back to an older style of teaching. As time went on it is assumed that his teaching style remained the same, however the standards of what is acceptable in the practice of training young horses is being called into question. Therefore to a lot of us this may seem like senseless use of the crop but to him and to those riders within that clinic is served their purposes fairly well. All of the horses cleared that jump perfectly well, even with a little gusto. Even though there is a lot we don't know, you can tell by the video that none of those horses were visible injured because of the use of that crop, annoyed yes, but injured, no. There was no blood not even a bruise. Because of that fact I would not deem this abuse by any means, and I trust that the the most famous world renown trainer would never put horses, especially young ones into any sort of senseless exercise that was a detriment to their well being. In short, its just a blurry video that looks worse then it probably is, George Morris knows what he's doing, and all of the horses were totally fine.

@nsequestrian7 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming by how you are commenting you have never trained a horse before. Can I make that assumption? Well if I am wrong please fill me in, but just to clear a few things up. With spooky horses, the whip is not a punishment all the time, yes there are cases where it is but most of the time it is used as encouragement. You don't hit them hard, to them it feels like a tap that someone would give you to say "hey I'm here". Most spooky green horses want to put their head down and sniff it. Now imagine going from a canter up to a jump to that. Since physics doesn't normally allow motion to stop without hitting something, you are going to go flying. It teaches the horse that this isn't anything to be scared of, and it also keeps you safe.

I'm getting mad reading these comments. Most of these people ride push button horses and they are like "you don't need a crop your leg should be enough" I'm not saying you need a crop but I'm sure George Morris knows what he's talking about, do you want to go compete against him..? While he is one of the most accomplished rider, the equestrian world treats him as if he is a god but he's not, he's human and yes some people are going disagree with his methods sometimes. I think several of these comments have a point because it doesn't make much sense to use a crop on a horse that has just been told to stop especially since the crop is simply used as a tool to encourage the horse to move forward, and I think that's a general rule of riding, so I was a little confused while watching as well. I don't understand why some of these girls commenting on this video are being a little over the top about defending him, why are y'all putting other riders down for disagreeing with him? It's just an opinion. Shouldn't we be lifting each other up instead of putting each other down. I mean I've won 2 world championship titles at the age of 15 which was 4 years ago but I still think that I will always learn something new every time I ride my horse and there are many times where I feel like I could ride better. Also, just because someone receives "international acclaim" for a sport doesn't make them better than everyone else.They are many professionals with so many great methods that could give even George Morris a run for his money because every horse and rider are different and the same methods are not going to work for every pair perfectly. I've certainly been in the equestrian world long enough to understand the dynamics of it.

This really irritates me. I don't care who you are or what you've accomplished, you shouldn't use a whip casually. A horse who is trained to be sensitive to the lightest of aids (most horses) WILL be sensitive to the lightest of aids. 2:34 the horse wasn't even "spooky" about the jump until the rider hit him

+xLunai my horse is dead to the aids... so not all horses are, the way put that implied that horses should be

+Brittany Alexander I understand some horses are that way, but if a horse can feel a fly on his back don't you think he can feel a rider's leg or a shift in body weight? In no way am I saying that I am a trainer or that I can fix your problem, but I honestly believe with consistent training any horse can be responsive to light aids.

George Morris is perhaps the MOST accomplished hunter/jumper rider in the history of the sport. The idea of this exercise is to walk a horse up to a fence that it may see as scary, stand there so they can look at it and tap them with the crop to have them pay attention and really look at it. Then when they come back they actually jump it and then they see there is nothing wrong with a scary jump just because it looks different. The crop is not designed for punishment or abuse but for encouragement and to give the horse confidence in the rider. When you are all internationally recognized riders and win the Maclay at age 15 you can talk.

George Morris has achieved more in the hunter/jumper world than just about anybody in the world, that being said, this technique he's teaching seems quite archaic in comparison to the "Natural Horsemanship" methods that are currently proving their worth universally in all disciplines. It seems a little backwards to create tension in front of a scary jump when the horse is standing quietly out of obedience, and then let the horse escape the jump by circling away. But you can't argue that he got all the horses to go over it, but many of them rushed or kicked out on the landing side.
