I love history and think that the matter of the civil war was a big change. Lincoln stated that in his inaugural speech that for every stroke of the lash on a slave a soldier in the civil war died... I think that if black people, on whose reason in part PART the civil war was, TEXAS AND MISSISSIPPI held no reasons back on why they joined the confederacy. SLAVERY...who were the slaves...blacks. It was not based on anything about indentured servants... If black people look at the lives of Frederick Douglass and Robert Smalls there is no reason why black males should feel they have no way to be great in a good day. The two mentioned people were slaves...one in Maryland and one in South Carolina. South Carolina had a senator who stated that COTTON IS KING and no one dare make war on COTTON... This statement was made in 1858...Robert Smalls was a teenager when Hammond of South Carolina made that statement and for those who know Smalls was not letting that stop him from what he was going to do...He Smalls became a leader and not one who made people like Taney, Hammond or others king in his mind. As this song symbolizes that the states were coming back together (my silly self thought this song was about John Wilkes Booth, a punk, being honored) and being united, so can we black people in the states understand that we are to be together and united like the deeds of Robert Smalls and Josiah Henson. Have a good day.

The more I understand about the civil war, amazingly, the more I feel sorry for Lincoln. Pressure from Frederick Douglass (and I am understanding why) to attack slavery...Stuck in the matter with Nathaniel Gordon and having him killed. Stuck with the presidents of the confederacy and that matter. Stuck with the matter of his cabinet who wanted him to pursue death for people like Lee. Stuck with the matter of his sons dying. Stuck with a wife who did not always respect him. Stuck with the matter of Irish attacking blacks in New York. Stuck with the matter of having death threats. Stuck with the matter of the banks...ok we get the point.

In fact, it took much longer for slavery to end, don't get carried away by the narrative.

The 1st Minnesota changed the course of the decisive Battle of Gettysburg. Desperate to make time for reinforcements to arrive, on Gettysburg's second day, July 2, 1863, General Winfield Scott Hancock sent the 262 members of 1st Minnesota to halt a Confederate assault. They succeeded in capturing a Confederate flag and held the line for the Union, but all but 47 of them were killed, wounded, or captured. The regiment lost 17 more facing Pickett's Charge to end the battle the next day.
