It really gets my goat when we get criticized by these people. And have you noticed how they have English/British names? Roger Jones doesn't look very Welsh. As someone said to me, once you allow these people in, you're buggered. Quite.

Thanks for this, we are hoping to revive the tradition in Llangrannog, Ceredigion this year. I can easily see this in the local pub, but as we want to involve local children we might not use a real skull - it's pretty scary!

@ruthbaldwin3965

The Mari Lwyd is a uniquely Welsh ritual from contemporary Wales, but with roots in Victorian folklore, late medieval popular culture, and ancient Celtic religion. The core format is simple: the principle actors perform a very basic drama and the rest of the people present are an essential part of the ritual rather than merely audience members. A few people approach the building leading the Mari Lwyd, an outlandish costume consisting of a decorated horse’s skull carried by a concealed man or woman. They ask for entry; they are refused by those inside, and debate back and forth in verse. Traditionally, this is all in Welsh, but the Vancouver Welsh Society chose to do this bilingually. Eventually, the Mari Lwyd and her company are allowed to enter. The mari dances and teases the people present, which is understood to bring good fortune to everyone there. Sites and articles on the Internet provide lots of information on the tradition.

We added the aprons to signify that we were the householders, and the beer mugs to signify the other group were coming asking for refreshment.

@@ruthbaldwin3965 Mari Lwyd is not uniquely Welsh nor is it Medieval or 'Celtic' in origin. Neither does it have any religious connotations. It's a 'mast' hobby horse and and there are very similar traditions in England. For instance the 'The Old Horse' in the Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border area (a sheep version is called 'Old Tup'). The 'Hooden Horse' in Kent and 'The Broad' (a bull) in the Cotswolds. And there are others. And there were other 'Mari Lwyd' traditions in other areas of Wales but these went by quite different names - so fanciful stories of its origins based on the name 'Mari Lwyd' don't really work. All the above customs don't appear in any written records before about 1800 so they are a relatively recent creation. And it was all about poor agricultural labourers trying to make a penny or two and getting a bite to eat at the lean time of the year.

Nice dancing lads ,really enjoyable . Bampton is a lovely morris tradition . Im a limey to olde now to dance ,but my old side in England Surrey was resurrected in the 70,s from info found in the parish church archives circa 1499 . They wore in those days wooden clogs and their colours were green and yellow,and they danced in the old market town ,and as you know the music was the pipe and tabor. Thanx for posting !!

The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is traditionally performed in early September in Abbots Bromley, Stafforshire. However, this version is based on the interpretation of the dance by the Thaxted Morris Men who perform this dance annually at the Thaxted Ring Meeting.
