Beautiful scenery. We are going around the north island of New Zealand in ten days. First two weeks of September. Hope it isn’t too cold and rainy.

Keep in mind all these rocks can be climbed. Greek climbers have created many routes and the ascent is pretty magical. While you agonize to climb, on the next Rock at the top of a Monastery, people staring at you and smile... Surreal situation. Of course, hikers can be served as well. 🙂

It was the determination of the Greeks trying to avoid the Turks, literally. Monasteries on the top of the Rocks, all over the Greek area. For 400 years Turks kept us into obscurantism, darkness but we survived almost "unscathed". However, we lost 400 years of progress. When our City fell in 1453, Constantinople, it was the richest in the world with Rome being second. For the next 400 years we were simply trying to avoid them and that's why we remained Christians and Greeks, while other nearby Ethnicities, simply converted to Islam and even joined the Turks, altogether trying to eradicate us. Our short story after Classical Greece which for 400 years includes nothing important, unfortunately. One of our last inventions, the "Greek Fire" was a powerful weapon sadly, in the tries to repel the Turks. We kept the secret so well hidden, guarded, we even ourselves lost the recipe.🙂

2500 years ago it was then a pagan temple and not a church. The monks also went to live in those hills to hide from the persecutions of the Turks. This church was bombed by the Germans. Nazi party members did not have an airforce. Germany had. Political correctness is unbareble. A part from that your video is nice thanks.

It is so sad to see Zipolite all built up now. I lived there for two winters, 84-5 and 85-6. It was soooo off the beaten track back then. My rent was $50 a month for a cabin on top of a hill, about mid-city. I showered and ate at one or two different restaurants at the beach's edge. It was a perfect place to hang between circus seasons back in the EUA. I got a lot of good juggling practice in on Zipolite beach when I wasn't braving the waves and currents there. Glad I went to Zipolite instead of Puerto Escondido. Even then, PE was too touristy. Thanks for the updates on the Mexican beaches, I know where NOT to go now.

One kind of has to wonder why anyone would want to move to the States. I would gladly move away from the Untied States and never come back, if I had the means. I wouldn't move to Mexico. Bahia, Brasil has my heart. Very nice people there in Brasil, I dare say "hipper" than and not square like so many amerikants. I so love jazz/samba and bossa. Blues is loved in Brasil, too, proof that they are hip, or many of them are, anyway.

You callin' me a liar? You'd also be calling the tour guides liars too then :P The church was made using the stones from an apollo temple - that's what makes it 2K years old...

@@CastawaywithCrystal 2000 years ago there was hardly any Christianity. Pagan temples were not churches. They were temples. Their ruins were used in later centuries to build churches. But not 2000 ago.
