Great video. Have you every cut the craft fur patch side to side vs. lengthwise? The reason I ask is that a friend of mine cuts strips about 3/8 wide going side to side. He ties them on the hook shank and then does touching wraps rather like one does with chenille. I have tried and done nothing but make a mess which results in my really hating craft fur. Many thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

when tying with shanks ,start by tying on a small section fo spider wire or equivalent to the shank the run loose end through the eye of the hook allow 5-7 mm. slippage re attach the loose end to the shank and tie it down well. Cut any tag end off and apply super glue or zap-a-gap to shank to lock it on.

any large hook I use I put a small piece of micro tubing (euro strike indicator tubing) onto the hook point from stabbing my fingers . It works great, with less blood.

What's your reason for tying in the three pieces of rabbit to create pectorals rather than spinning the rabbit in a dubbing loop and then trimming it from under the hook? Except for the rabbit being a little shorter, that would seem to do the same thing but be faster and easier, and maybe more durable too.

I think it just helps to fill the gaps from the helmet on the sides cause of the leather
@YellowstoneCountryFlyFishing2 жыл бұрын
@@zachschreurs7759 That's reasonable. I loathe coneheads and their ilk (prefer beads), so if I tied something like this I would make a fuller head with fur and maybe trim some of it to shape behind a jig bead, so filling in under the helmet wouldn't be a factor for me. Stumbled on this fly when looking for simple jig-style sculpins for fishing under indicators from a drift boat.

Underwater these types of "shrimp" flies have too much undulating material and don't look anything like shrimp. Its effectively a streamer with eyes tied at the back. Its a nice enough looking fly and will catch fish but its not a shrimp imitation. Its an attractor pattern.

That’s a great pattern! The simple idea of tying in the fins and the cover piece really creates the profile that you’re looking for, and gives you specific places to apply the UV resin.

I am always lookn for ways to keep from paying for overpriced fly tying materials. You and I think alike.

@Stephen, I disagree. This fly delivers a key movement to get a strike. The triple twitch mimics a stressed out minnow and bass and pike can't help them selves when food can't decide where to escape to. The head is the key to this fly. I add liquid latex to the fly's head to lock the shape in, then resin over the eye bleeding into the fur to prevent a tooth lifting the eye. Tweezers pinching the eyes to dry helps a lot. When you jerk twitch the fly, it wants to go off to the side. The jointed tail has impulse an jacknifes the fly into a profile shot. That's the dinner bell. I build mine with 2/0 head and size 1 tail Kanekalon hair and brushed out yarn.
