They started their trip yesterday because specific time is shown. How about using " have started", Present Perfect also indicates an action that has started in the past and still ongoing. In this case, the action started in the past and might be still going on. For example, we can say they started their trip yesterday and still continue now. In this case can we use " have started because the action is ongoing? What's your take on that?
@englishwithspeakayou21 күн бұрын
If you take 'yesterday' out of this sentence, then you can use the Present Perfect. However, when you see a time phrase or word that specifies a particular time in the past, like 'yesterday,' only the Past Simple is possible.
@FayziyevFirdavs21 күн бұрын
@englishwithspeakayou That is quite clear. I get it butI am wondering to know the following: If the action started yesterday and still going on now. How do you say that? including the word "yesterday". For example in Russian we say: Мы начали путешествовать вчера и до сих пор путешествуем.. Past tense denotes completed action but this is not a completed action, it's ongoing action. But if I want to use the word yesterday and if is still ongoing action. How do I say that ?
@englishwithspeakayou21 күн бұрын

@englishwithspeakayou Bye the way, Can we say like: They have been starting their trip since yesterday?
@FayziyevFirdavs21 күн бұрын
@englishwithspeakayou I appreciate your help but I learnt that Past Tense is a completed action. It means that the action started and finished in the past and has no any influence or result at present moment. I wonder why can not use "yesterday" at Present Perfect when the action is ongoing. Why in other languages we can say that but not in English?
