I was on the band in the early 80's. For a while, I carpooled to a Bway show with Jack Gale, who was on in the 60's and Sal Spicola who was on in the 70's. We brought our respective cassettes (!) of the tune to see whose was the fastest. This one is faster, I think, than any of our 3, but truly the fastest was that 60's BBC broadcast recording. Even Nistico was barely hanging on by his fingernails on that one! Loved being on the band! Had always been one of my dreams to play with one of the for-real big bands but I thought it would be on the saxophone. I ended up being a bass player and had to negotiate the tempo on that effing tune while Woody let EVERYBODY blow. Band had a couple great baritone players (which had been my instrument) between Smulyan and and Mike Brignola!

Birch Johnson. He was playing lead in 79 when Woody Herman performed at our high school. I got to find my poster he and Woody signed.

Nice piece, Bob. Interesting that he kept the band fluid. If he couldn't book that specific person for the gig, seems like he would poke around until he could fill the gig with someone compatible.

Joey Rodriguez on screech trumpet at the end. He looks like a kid. Like a high school freshman. He was squeaking out some high notes, but he wasn't doing anything very musical.

@@Kontrabass66 what I play, yes, I play musically. But your argument is a logical fallacy. It doesn't matter what you nor I nor anyone else can do. My comment was about what this particular person was doing. Blame shifting doesn't change the fact as to what this particular person was doing. Propaganda techniques don't work on me.

On the album, Jim Pugh plays the trombone solo on this number. That’s the Thundering Herd with the football themed cover picture. Jim later played with Chick Corea’s Return To Forever Band and Steely Dan. Birch Johnson, seen here, was later a member of the Blues Brothers Band. Both men have had extensive studio recording careers.
