I wonder if the rough riding at speed is a function of the wheels not being balanced properly. In a number of the photos, the front and rear wheels do not have balance counterweights to offset the weight of the coupling links attaching them to the center axle, and the center wheels have bouncing counterweights on the same side as the coupling to the other wheels. I imagine the placement of the center wheel weights is due to the piston connections being on the opposite side of the axle, which would balance out the center axle well, but not having counterweights on the front or rear wheels probably throws the engine enough out of balance to make it want to bounce.
