Would be interesting to account for fixed utility costs from the perspective of comparing mixed utility systems vs electric only ones. The fixed costs involved with a gas service are considerable

Modern cold climate heat pumps work in Canadian winters without having a gas backup. The household saving are greatly increased if you eliminate gas from your property completely since the monthly fees you pay to the gas company are greater than the fees you pay for the gas consumed. If the temperature dips below -25C, an immersion electric water heating element can provide the extra heating for a few days a year. Most of Canada's population never sees -25C. When you consider a heat pump, start by calculating the total cost of gas and gas company fees that you pay per year.

Air source heat pumps might work in a dry cold climate. The UK has a damp cold climate. This ices up the element there is no efficiency when electric has to be used to melt the insulating ice.

Is there a ventilation unit that allows easy swap of hrv core with erv core - so it can be optimized for the season? tight homes need the drying effect of an hrv in the spring and fall.

That is a lot of loss in R value with poly ISO in these cold Canadian climates. DOw rigid foam is what I have decided to use instead of the Zip r sheathing that contains Poly ISO. I was all set to use Zip R sheathing. Glad I did a "belt and suspenders" job to find out many sources that confirm poly iso loses its r value starting at only +10C. I will be using 2 layers of sheets of 2 inch Dow rigid foam, seams off set, and plywood, not OSB due to concerns about sheer factor in having 4 inches of rigid foam to go through. One inch of Dow rigid foam =R5 and because it is Dow, it was made with an environmentally friendly blowing agent so it does not lose its R value over time nor it is affected by water if used under ground. Glad I did the belt and suspenders research ! We work hard to save up our money, so this extension build is important to also get the right material for the climate we live in. Cheers from Atlantic Canada👍🇨🇦🍁💨

How is having a family cottage - meaning allowing a building to remain unoccupied for 75%+ of the time - good for the environment? These "do-gooders" so often talk out of both sides of their mouths!
@christophercooke38662 жыл бұрын
(I am not affiliated with Building Knowledge, but Gord is my uncle.) Folks continue to build cottages and new homes across the country, despite the carbon outlay. In this case, an existing inefficient building was torn down and replaced with a net Zero building as an opportunity to prove out several new technologies that will be needed for Ontario to move to a net Zero regulatory environment. That is, the carbon outlay on this build is an investment in our future.

Most of the video could be presented as a simple web page that concisely enumerates the challenges and benefits of NZH. If you had the in-set video overlays that pointed out what you were talking about, then I would find this more valuable... Sadly, this was little more than hot air blown at the microphone... Drawings are okay... but looking at the actual finished product is far more valuable... You're already in the house... why not showcase it while you're there??
