That's a fair comparison. I wouldn't be surprised if in 2026 a follow up video includes a line to compare which has AI capability built into it. I also think 2025 is when the OS debate gets really ugly. Not that it wasn't ugly before, but there's a deadline for Windows 10 support coming up this year. Deadlines have a tendency to have an affect on people in one way or another and often put pressure on people to make a decision hastily that they've been putting off. In that haste, people will go online and try and research their options and find the heated online debate that's been going on with a lot of unhelpful half truths from all sides of the arguments and it'll be very hard to get the actual facts for a lot of people.

Thank you, that’s a very kind comment. I tried to put my Linux Fanboy hat to the side. I belatedly realized I didn’t mention security, which is a whole other minefield of finger pointing 😝. If it were up to me, I’d point the bulk of Windows 10 users to Zorin or Mint and be done with it. I still maintain those are fine for the average home computer/laptop user who is not using video mixing consoles, midi interfaces or needs 3 or 4 displays …

@@sonsieface And as someone who's been running Linux for over 20 years, I agree. Those two distros are great for average users and depending how well Cosmic does, Pop!_OS may join those ranks. Plus, Valve working with multiple vendors for more hand helds based on Linux may also have an affect on the market too as people get used to how well gaming works on a non-Windows device that can also be used as a desktop. I'm hoping to see Linux market share climb up to 5% or more this year, but we'll see what moves Microsoft makes. Microsoft didn't get their monopoly status by playing fair...

I'm currently slowly moving from Windows 10 to Pop OS! Both for personal as well as professional use. I'll still be needing Windows 10 as a dualboot setup but only for drama-free gaming and some proprietary shit for work that I cannot do through virtualbox on Pop Os! I've tried mac in the past but it's in my opinion extremly frustrating to use as a poweruser so even on my Mac Mini (model 2014) i've got Windows on it so that my wife can actually DO STUFF on it. Even in 2025 it's still usable while running Windows lol.

I think learning MacOS has the largest learning curve. Most of the keyboard shortcuts are out of whack, from ctrl "arrow".to the awkward cmd c. The lack of ctrl f and then F3 to search. It's multitasking and multi monitor setups are very buggy compared to Win / Lin too. It also has certain dialogs than can't be used via KB. Windows users can use Linux, Linux users can use Windows, MacOS is a special breed. There are many design elements of MacOS that you can see was designed for dummies. Try using HOME/END/PGUP/PGDN. And when typing in Safari, like now, if you type too fast it skips letters as the "text" predictor is too slow. This on MBP. Heck no collapsable system tray! WinXP had this.

@kpbendeguz 3 күн бұрын
Well if you set windows key combos as a standard then no surprise that windows fits to that standard better. Macos has standard key combos since 1984 and obviously macos developers priorize current macos users' needs than windows users'. I've found no bugs in macos multi monitor setups or multitasking especially compared to windows.
@df3yt
@df3yt 3 күн бұрын
@@kpbendeguz I agree with your comment to a point, the issue is many of these shortcuts are inconsistent between apps, yet are consistent in Linux / Windows. Additionally when evaluating an OS we need to see how well it plays in the world and MacOS just doesn't.
@kpbendeguz
@kpbendeguz 3 күн бұрын
@@df3yt Inconsistent because those apps don't apply the macos standards. If native macos apps would be released on windows and linux without applying the windows standards then those platforms would be inconsistent as well. When evaluating an OS we should not base it on personal preferences for the first place.

Yes, I thought it was just my “Linux” prejudice, but I still find macOS a bit of a chore even after a few months. Can’t speak to the display issues, but I don’t doubt what you say. I mean, they did a good job of putting a pretty face on Unix, but I still feel more comfortable in Linux with Gnome or Cinnamon, etc.

Thank you for making this video. I have a strong desktop computer and a Samsung Odyssey+ VR headset. When it installed the 24H2 update, it killed my headset, as well as all of the other headsets out there that use and are based on WMR (Windows Mixed Reality Portal), which is getting discontinued in the MS store in October. I'll be re-installing Win 11 version 23H2 on my computer from an ISO file, but was worried about Microsoft automatically squeaking the 24H2 update in eventually somehow. This is good information, and I'll do what you have shown here. 🙂

@@sonsieface yeah. I really prefers panels because docks are always moving and you don't really know where the icons are in autohide (which I always use because I like to use all the screen really state in my browser). But I welcome any stylistic change that does not affect functionality and can be disabled if the use doesn't want them. Floating panels like KDE would be nice. but I'm sticking with gnome because it is more visually consistent and it has nice rounded corners (corners look terrible in KDE)

Thats funny, i have just finished installing a mobile Jellyfin server on an old Lenovo notebook with linux mint. The idea is to carry it for movie evenings at friends house. On the desktop i have conky displaying the ip adress in big letters for connecting the client. In a new location you just connect it to the wlan and connect a client with the new server ip. Pentium 2020 ivy bridge, 8 gb ddr3 ram, 64 gb ssd! Movies are on a like 15 yo 600 gb hdd (compressed with ffmpeg via batch script). On linux mint i installed jellyfin with the curl command as described on the website. On android clients i was able to stream 4 movies in parallel without significant server load. It maybe different on apple devices due to the need for transcoding. On a firestick even the dvd based movies look very nice! I love that setup...

I've used Windows since windows 95. Linux since 2003 and MacOS since 2008. For the normal everyday user and power user/creator there is no OS better than MacOS. Full stop. Price, upgrades, and customization aside if we just just comparing the operating system Mac is the best....by a LOT. If you like playing with the OS, tweaking endlessly etc Linux is better for you. If you like playing triple A PC games its windows. For everything else Mac wins hands down. Its not even close.

Interesting! Been using maOS on an M1 MacBook Air for four or five months. The hardware is great, not so enamored with the Mac desktop. It’s fine and seems very stable just took me longer than I thought to be comfortable in it. My daily driver is Linux (of various flavors), and I confess to being one of those “fiddlers”, haha. Oddly though my desktop setups usually end up looking “Mac-like” with a dock and a top menu bar - go figure. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Arch is not the "adult distro" that would go to ZorinOS, Linux Mint ect. Arch is a toy for script kiddies to play with. Most of us go through that phase at some point. I did maybe 8-10 years ago. If you care about learning everything about Linux play with arch. If you just want an OS to get real work done pick a different distro.

Fortunately, I don’t really need to do “real work” on my laptop; I just fart around for my own enjoyment. I’ve used Windows at work for years, Linux at home for 7 or 8 years, and MacOS occasionally over the last couple of years. Zorin is nicely polished, as are most versions of Mint, no disagreement there!

Welcome to to Arch, so you just missed a couple steps "adding the desktop:" just like you said you didn't hit enter. And you missed "use network manager" part. If you complete all the steps correctly it is unnecessary to "chroot" at the end. Chroot does come in handy if you need to do a manual intervention (fix something) you can mount the system and fix the more than likely a bad update. good job!

They will, but for the “normal” user (KZbin, email, Facebook, doing taxes) “friendly” distros like Mint or Zorin could replace those quite readily. The biggest hurdle is that “normal” users have no idea how to install an OS of any kind in the first place, so it’s kind of moot unfortunately.

Tried it too but I do use external monitor with my Framework 13 and fractional scaling. Scaling worked, external monitor would not work in single monitor mode and mirroring was out of question due to completely different screen ratio. Besides that, external wired keyboard would be lost periodically. Went back to Pop_OS. I liked that one can set Fedora for remote login though. I want that for my occasional RDP from desktop to laptop. It creates a new session instead of sharing existing session.
