Leather looks dry. You have neglected the boots by not greasing it !

For the price you pay for Salomon, I'd recommend Meindl or Hanwag entry level hikers. You might also consider Altberg boots, or Zamberlan. For the type of hiking you're doing - (real hiking) - you need a real mountain, hiking boot - Salomon, Nike, Addidas, UnderArmour, Jack Wolfskin, North Face.....these are what I'd call suedo hiking boots, good enough for gentle trails, walking the dog, or urban hiking....you start hitting alpine conditions and long distances....you need the real thing. Interestingly, the price of these "fake" adventure boots is only slightly less than the real thing.

Thanks - I think with the Salomon's there was an initial thing that they were kinda 'simple' to choose without getting sucked into a complex decision. I do want to try some Meindl boots on next and see what they are like.

How many miles / Kilometres do you calculate you did before they showed failure
@samstuff7 ай бұрын
Good question that I do not know the answer to. I would think low hundreds when I noticed. To be fair though, anything is going to show wear. I think for the toe cap area on these it would also be a function of how/where exactly your foot/toes flex in the boot. It is important to note that it does not stop them working as a boot, it is just I see where they are going to fail.

Hi do you have a rei store near your house? Shop there. Rei has a 1 year member warranty. It's the best in the shoe business

Dude, you are walking over a pair of boots, not tanks. Leather must be treated if it got wet. Also you need to clean them. If only they could speak…

They would tell you that if your packing list for a month long trek in Nepal included a shoe shine kit then you are doing it wrong; there are much more important things to take. This is basically as they came back, rinsed in stream or puddle using my hand to scrub. These boots are (according to Salomon) 'designed for long expeditions and tough conditions', thats what I got them for and what I put them through. Yes, absolutely, if you are not going far or for long then of course it's possible and practical to be much nicer to things.

Tought conditions is not walking over snow (water) for a month, tough conditions is walking over plants, rocks, spines, mud. Sure they are waterproof so you can cross a water stream or keep your feet dry in a rainy day, but they are not for diving. What you need is another type of boot like salewas for mountaineering ✌️

You may have confused treking in the Arctic with treking in Nepal. Nepal offers a wide variety of terrain and climates from tropical to far beyond healthy, high mountains to shallow valleys and plains, Tigers to Snow Leopards - it is a fantastic place to visit. On this trek, or treks as it became, we really did not go beyond a fair Alpine climate but for perhaps on a day or two, probably only a single morning on some interpretations. Never deep snow, or really snow at all; in fact I think the hail stones had at one point piled far higher than any snow we saw. It was the end of the rainy season, so there was certainly some rain and some hail. Nothing constant and not every day; it is also fairly standard to encounter worse weather in the afternoons, be it stronger wind or rain, so not impossible to avoid. All of this is well within the expected ability of this boot and never near exceeding what a reasonable person would class as Alpine - Salomons advertised usage. We did not, for example, have to wade through deep snow, as you appear to with to introduce. For fair comparison of the doom you suggest for doing so, the Quest 3's did take me through proper snow and managed to live to tell the tale; they also took me much higher than we went on this trek, again without any issue not resolved with a little super glue - which was fair given their level of wear when we started.
