Amid the myriad of standout scenes I always found this one to be the most touching : Two criminals and extremely dangerous men having a conversation about assassination attempts. However, every 30 seconds or so you’re reminded that it’s a loving father and son just hanging out and shooting the breeze about their respective lives.

I’ve heard an interesting interpretation here that while Vito was big on rules and family and all that, Michael was a soldier. In the military, there is none of that crap about unwritten rules or honorable battle. It’s victory or death. You win by any means necessary. So Michael saved his own neck, and his empire, by breaking the rules. Not only did he target the heads of the 5 families directly, but in dishonorable situations. Trapped in a revolving door, during sex, getting a massage, fake cop (and shot in the back while running), coming out of an elevator. And during a christening. He fought the war like a soldier, not like a mafia boss. That is what made his reign so brutal. Not that the other bosses hadn’t resorted to underhanded tactics in the past, but Michael used them with no shame. Victory or death.
