@TrueWizardry15 сағат бұрын
@@dominion-masterI was going to to come in and mention this after seeing the vid. Overlord is literally what you mentioned, what if you played as Sauron. You are some non-descript death knight type guy with a pointy spikey helmet who controls hordes of goblin creatures to do his bidding, and you live in a tall black tower riddled with spikes. As you progress through the game, you grow your army, and can refurbish your tower to be either luxurious, or menacing, or what have you, there's some fun customization there. The game's tone is drastically different to actually giving the player a villainous power fantasy, instead being QUITE silly and goofy, but honestly fits a LOT of the key points you were touching on, so you might wanna bump up the game higher on your list, just so you can see how similar this initial concept could be to the game, and potentially avoid any issues in the future.
@dominion-master14 сағат бұрын
@@TrueWizardry yea that's the main thing that a lot of these games fall into - no good answer to "why" you're evil, what your purpose is.. and all the evil stuff is candified and colorful so its marketable to kids.

Interesting. It’s definitely nice to see your thought process on things, though I did notice a couple things you missed. First, one simple way of showing power, which ties into the camera angle, is by having someone physically above others. To that end, the throne should be raised off the ground slightly, rather than directly on it. Secondly, the stock sitting pose of your character in the throne is… well a stock sitting pose. Having them be more relaxed would definitely help sell the “Dark lord” look. Perhaps each “class” of dark lord can have a different pose and different throne look to really sell things.
@dominion-master18 сағат бұрын
I totally agree with you, both things are caused by more or less technical problems - long time ago decided to avoid elevation on buildable areas in the game because having slopes causes a lot of problems for how to place buildings in games.. and you'll probably notice that vast, vast majority of RTS games only let you build on a flat surface... if they have base-building AND elevation like starcraft, the elevation is usually done with terraces and ramps - which is the same thing I'm doing... but the terraces have a certain minimum size that wouldn't look good in this camera shot. The animation being a boring generic sitting animation - also agree, but I'm not an animator and I couldn't find a good relaxed throne sitting animation anywhere... because its all the 3d stuff is purchased assets, people normally make 'sitting' animation intended for like NPC's in a bar or something or on a couch. If you or someone else could find a good throne animation from an asset store (I looked through unity and mixamo) I'd definitely buy it and use it.
@drdiabeetus441918 сағат бұрын
@@dominion-master Well, one way you could elevate the throne without running into that problem is by making the plinth or raised platform it's on a PART of the "Building" itself. I also thought of another, simpler thing you could definitely do to sell the "Powerful" angle. Have your throne flanked by a pair of ceremonial guards. Another way of showing you're important.
@dominion-master18 сағат бұрын

Rain world definitely has great art style, but I deliberately kept pixel art style out of this because I felt it wasn't "Unique" as so many indie games use that pixelated art style. That said, the visual style with the dark grungy background, choice of color palette etc.. could probably be grouped with the darker art styles I mentioned at the end, but you couldn't say that it was a giger/bekzinski inspired piece either right. It's a dark art style done well, like the game death trash.. but it's a little bit outside of the arbitrary line I drew in the sand :P

This video has convinced me to act like an uncooked potato. Too much work to cook and eat a potato, when there is an easier snack nearby. More importantly, nobody is scared of a potato eating them. You can even let a large potato sit around for a while, and just eat it later. Many people are okay with a large potato growing even larger. When the alternative is partnering with a devil and letting the devil get strong along side you. Maybe a potato partner is the one you team up with for win-win diplo.

But the potato needs another layer. Something to make me seem more fun and less grouchy. Nobody wants to engage with a jerk or a stick in the mud. So the Mr PotatoHead diplo strategy is what I will now be practicing. I'm a potato, but I'm fun and goofy!

very good information, the diplo side of dominions is something that isn't talked about often other than "do it" you're correct that controlling what wars happen and making friends from across the map is how you steer the reigns of a game and get things to happen in your favor quite often. One thing that Ive noticed is that most people (who ive played with at least) dont hold grudges between games, I dont know how things work in the bigger dom servers, so I see people being vile snakes in diplomacy quite often and then after a long game we all laugh it off and shake hands. the Machiavellian side of dominions is what makes it such a great game, and I think that playing with formal diplomacy on ruins that - good video!
@dominion-master4 ай бұрын
cross-game relationships are usually as you say, unless everyone knows you're a sneaky diplomancer and that's your style. I've had games where someone gets attacked by 5 people at once and they don't bother doing diplo with them, they go straight to me because they know, based on their history playing with me - that I'm the ring leader.. and if they make a deal with me I'll steer everyone else. Also had games where someone didn't want to include me in a coalition despite it being otherwise perfectly logical to do so, because they were afraid that I would poison the well and manipulate people into bad outcomes... It's not necessarily that people hold a grudge or want to be allies by default, it's just that they know what you're up to which reduces your space to diplomance.
@ichtyid4 ай бұрын
@@dominion-master yea sometimes that shit just fucking sucks, I play in domg games but only using ingame diplo/the thread can make communicating more difficult. but hey, knowing that youre good enough at diplo to scare people away just means that you can keep being ruthless and use the position to your advantage - I haven't had too many coalitions formed against me in dom6, but I have seen a lot of people complaining about them more often, it is more beneficial to 2v1 rather than 1v1, BUT it can also put you in a spot thats bad diplomatically as everyone will see you as someone who's "getting a free win" and thats reason to gang up. imo there's a middle ground sweet spot - a fine balance between winning a war/winning it TOO hard that's hard to maintain the image of so people don't get scared off/feel threatened by any action you take would love to play in a game vs you at some point and see the diplo-mancy in action
