Have you thought about or do you have a video using a manual setting, allowing you to set both aperture and shutter speed, then setting the ISO to auto? Then I can use my exposure compensation to get the proper exposure. I do this generally but sometimes it seems like I’m doing a few extra steps to get to the same point you are. Really good videos!

Very good review hitting a lot of the new features and how to apply them. I bought my Z6III the first day it came out to replace the original Z6 due to the frustrating auto focus. This camera backs up my Z9 and I’m so happy I can just about set up both cameras the same so it’s seamless to go from one to another during an event. I really hope Nikon is listening to some of your suggestions cause you’re spot on. Gonna check some of your other videos now.

Hi Miklos: thanks for another great video. As it turns out, I am shopping for an 85mm-equivalent lens for my ASPC Sony camera. Would it be reasonable to assume I would get similar performance for the E-mount (Sony) version of this product? Thanks also for the great evening photo session in Budapest last June.

Thank you so much Jim! It should have the exact same performance on a Sony APS-C sensor camera. Of course, there might be some slight fluctuations in the manufacturing process, but usually they have the same quality. Definitely worth the 180 USD.

THANK YOU for this video!! I am quite honestly shocked by the dynamic range of these files! WOW! I had glossed over the Z5 as a viable option in the past, but with the improved autofocus upgrades, dual cards slots, a joystick, dynamic range being this good and it being less than $1,000 as of 09/10/24 - WOW! The ONLY caveat for me would be that video crop in 4K at 1.7 - that's pretty steep, but I've been used to Canon's crop sensors for video (1.6) - so not much difference. Thank you as well for offering the RAW files for download. The proof is in the pudding and these files are as close to my D810 in iso invariance as anything I've seen in mirrorless and I've seen a lot!

You could use a special L bracket from small rig or ulanzi, mount the Z50 on tripod and use the flip screen for vlogging or selfie videography, talking heads. To control yourself without the leg of a tripod in the way. Nikon has an advertisement back in the day with this grip plate. But nobody knows about it, and everyone wonders, why Nikon makes the flip screen in this way. As they were idiots...
@miklosmayerphoto
@miklosmayerphoto 16 күн бұрын
They are of course not idiots, but there's a reason why the Z50 is almost the only camera on the market that has this downward-flipping screen. It's so unpractical - I know a specialised plate can solve it, but that's another inconvenience. If this was such a good design, they would have kept it for the Zf line and Z6 III
@chiftele08

@@miklosmayerphoto the smallrig L braket for the Z50 is the same convenience as the smallrig grip for the zfc and zf who sells like hell. Nikon has bad marketing, who don't push the influencers with this L braket besides a small advertise video about this possibility, and therefore nobody knows about this easy way to use selfie mode on a tripod, at least not KZbin influencers. I find this braket only by a pro videographer. The flip up screen like some Sony cameras has the same problem, with the mikro, light, and so on, at the hotshoe. Same workaround there for selfie capabilities. You are one of the KZbinrs with many in depth knowledge, but nobody is perfect. For example, I guess 50% of the Nikon KZbinrs, who enters the KZbin scene after the launch of the Z6 or Zfc never heard before about the Nikon "Film Simulations" like fujifilm. Despite the fact, that Nikon had Film simulations aka picture control, since 12 years now. Back in the DSLR time. And now, some KZbinrs tell us click Baiting: "Breaking News! Express! Nikon had also Film Simulations. What a great News!!!" A "news" who is 10 years old... 😉 As an example of how some KZbinrs are mostly on the surface of a model or brand. BECAUSE the lack of in depth knowledge of a model form many KZbinrs and reviewers AND the bad marketing of Nikon, we came in the situation that most of the reviewers don't knows anything about the concept of the tilt up or tilt down screen, and knows nothing about the possibility of use a simple L braket, who many landscapes photographers use all the time, and most of the reviewers tells the story about the dump Sony of Nikon brands, who construct bodys with this LCD Screens. And everybody who reads or see this, thinks, this LCD screens are unusable for vlogging and selfies, what bad cameras. And sells goes down, and Nikon and Sony released since than only flippy screens, because there marketing sucks nd most of the reviewers don't did there job to research better. That's very sad, and I though, you would thank me, and don't tell me, that this solution is stupid or inconvenience... It's the solution, many engineers with high salaries has thought it's a cost effective solution for beginners and enthusiast. With tripod or selfie stick for the enthusiast, without for absolute beginners who want to handheld a small setup.

What is the point of tracking the eye inside a box and then moving the box? The eye tracking without the box is already doing the job.
@miklosmayerphoto

Because you often want to limit the area where it should find the eyes. but once you have the eyes locked on, it would make sense to track them around the whole frame. Basically like the 3D mode, but with a box that has adjustable size.

Thank you for the excellent review. I was blown away by the Z8's ability to track the border collie's face in your other video. I was expecting (hoping) close to same performance by the Nikon Z6III, but was somewhat taken aback by what you were able to show from your video, as the autofocus seemed a bit erratic / was initially slow to find the dog's face. The fact that the dog's eyes are not as clearly visible as in the Z8 video may impact this. Have you had the chance to do any more testing or gain additional experience in this regard? I am looking to upgrade from Nikon Z6, and taking pictures of dogs running (usually straight towards the camera) is one of my favorite sort of pictures to take. And this is an absolute chore with the Z6, which required single point focusing with unreliable results. It seems the Z8 is well capable of this, but I am just wondering how short the Z6 III will fall from the Z8s performance. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nice video - a few comments though: With respect to your criticism that the eye track should take over one you put the box on the person there is a reason that this does NOT happen. That is because the point of the box is to be able to quicly select different targets - if the box disappeared and the eye tracking took over you would not be able to switch to another target easily. What you are looking for is the use of subject detect with 3D tracking mode as you do later in the video. In 3D tracking with subject eye detect turned on you can select a target with the box and then the eye detect will take over until you let off the AF/shutter button - in this way you can select a target and then let the eye detect track around the frame. What you have described is not a bug - it is a feature and a good one. Also, you can set function buttons all over the camera to activate any AF focus mode including 3D - so if you want 3D to activate when you hit OK you can - it is much better to do this with the AF ON button however - then the shutter button can be ALL Area which you can immediately override with the AF ON button. -PD

Thank you for your comment! I tried to set it up for the OK button, and it didn't work. Tracking around the whole frame: I absolutely understand that is why 3D tracking is, but I find that the 3D tracking box is quite small. On Sonys at least you can configure it's size (S, M, L). If I use the Custom box on the Nikon Z 6 III, I was expecting the camera to track the found eye as long as I was holding halfway down the shutter button (or Af-ON). If I want to find a new target, I would just lift my finger off. Anyways, to me it was surprising, because Canons track the subject around the whole frame even in custom Area AF mode.
@photographydiscourse1185

@@miklosmayerphoto Understood - I see what you are saying. The put the 3D box on the subject and then eye detect will take over all over the screen, but you are saying that the 3D box is too small for your liking - I understand what you are saying now. Still, I am not sure why you would want to use the OK button when using the shutter with the AF ON and/or Disp buttons are much more ergonomic, but of course to each their own. Overall, very good work on the review! -PD

Oh God, thanks for pointing that out! I clearly lost my arithmetic skills... :))) Indeed, that would be about 5 stops.
