This is really good footage it gives a great insight into great sunny days of the past. A lot of families from Pomeroy settled there and Elsie Daly used to bring the horses over to sell. I'm not sure did they sell them over the the course of the festival or just in general. Does any one have a video of the races?

Hello Sean. Thanks for your comment. That's interesting about Pomeroy, I never knew that. Somewhere along the way I've seen a very short movie clip of the actual races, only a few seconds of very grainy cine. I've just been searching for it on KZbin to no avail. I think it must be a very small part of some longer video. If I find it I'll let you know. Best wishes. Roly.

I'm always drawn first to the music, as it seems to me that if that's no good I can't then focus on the lyric, but I do appreciate the words, too. The lyricists of the Golden Age were true craftspeople! Mercer was of course one of the best, a master of the bucolic. I read that Lester Young liked to know the words, where applicable, to the songs he played, as he felt it helped him to better interpret the song, and this of course is true, particularly in playing a ballad as an instrumental. Your appreciation of this poignant standard is so apparent -- beautiful treatment!

What a cute tune this is and how charmingly you interpret it -- marvelous guitar work and vocal. It's so true that these songs from now going on a couple of centuries ago provide a vivid glimpse of their times -- and they deserve to be remembered.

Thank you. Yes a nice song typical of Joe Wilson. He wrote a lot of material (and a book with the quaint title 'songs and drolleries') and composed what is still one of the great local favourites 'Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Hinny'.

Thank you. Yes an old one indeed, they say the words were probably written in the 1700s and the pipe tune was already around. What I like about these songs is that they capture old dialect words in a nice way, words that sometimes are disappearing from usage. A good example here is hyem for home.

Thank you. I was looking through a collection of CDs and found this recording and had completely forgotten about it. When I played the CD I was surprised at the recording quality (I think it was probably with Billy Harper's Sony Walkman with those minidiscs). Happy Days.

Wow thank you. Around that time I played the song a lot, in different settings. It was always well received. I first heard it on a great album by the late Dave Frishberg 'Getting Some Fun Out of Life'. Our intro/ending owes a lot to that version.
