I'm half American and have Colombian AKA Spanish so basically I am mixed and I have light skin with curly hair so you can clearly tell that I have Spanish features and also American features from my dad. I think America overemphasizes "exceptionalism" to a fault, though. Not everybody is "university material", or "a top scholar," or a math genius or a top athlete. It's tough to have be exceptional all the time, especially in the last 20 years or so, JUST to live a decent life... JUST to be able to afford a home, JUST to be able to live the middle class dream. I remember the governor of California saying in his State of State address that "you shouldn't have to be a multimillionaire to live a middle class life in this state." That's sad. I am American and currently live in Europe and I was shocked to discover folks in Germany who work at a menial jobs like cleaning windows and doing general maintenance work at the mall and they are able to afford their OWN large apartments with patio, have health insurance paid, child care, ALL WHILE NOT BEING ON WELFARE OR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE and go to university for very low cost or free if they wanted to. It was incredibly shocking.

I think the disproportion is just based on what we see. The proportion in most american East coast cities is 52/48 women to men - but it seems more skewed because in US Women go out and socialize more and in larger groups. American men stay home with their video games and doritos. I think in the UK it is a bit flipped; the men go out to the pubs with their mates and women are perhaps less social in that particular scene.
