As a young black man there was nothing more proud to see the Pan Am 34th Street Heliport. Would drive down RDR South just to see Pan Am there. What a good excuse...

Flew LHR to JFK on Clipper Constitution, on return leg to London fell asleep for no more than 30 minutes on waking on waking noticed that breakfast had been served asked stewardess if I could have a breakfast, very abruptly told I had missed the breakfast service, 42 years on I still remember that and vowed never to fly Pan Am again.

Oh but it was. They served 5 courses in First between Dallas and New York. No airline today really approaches them - not Emirates, Ethiad, Singapore - with the sole exception of Lufthansa's First Class Terminal in Frankfurt.

The recession, deregulation, merger with National Airlines doomed Pan Am. Also Pan Am 103 & poor management. The best airline ever.

We talk about the elegance of flying in that era, but there's nothing elegant about walking to the plane in the rain and boarding up steep steps. Although I will admit that the pretty stewardess do compensate for that.

It was such a great beginning... BUT the CIA took it over....they HAD to kill it after too many people caught wind of the truth about PAA 103 being a cover up of IRAN CONTRA....and the cocaine was EVERYWHERE...
