I love it. It reminds me the music from an old LP “Le Banjo Amèricain” by Steve Waring, which had the tabs for some pieces: “Hotfoot Hen”, King William’s March”, “John Henry”... He is American but moved to France, got married and I guess he's still playing. A very fine banjo and guitar picker…;-)

Nice theme. I was confused with the “slack key” so I think I got your tuning (F - Bb - D - G) from low to high (one whole tone down all the strings. Is it so, please? However, I saw sometimes they also call “slack key” the tuning G - C - E - G) (just lowering the high A down to G) Would you please comment on this tuning? Is it for the sound, for the strings…? Thanks for sharing
@jonsukulele10 күн бұрын
Yeah, you're right, slack key isn't the right term for this tuning, I'll change the description. I thought that I could use slack key to refer to any lower or "slack" tuning but it turns out that it's only used for GCEG tuning. Apparently, it's also known as "taropatch". I've used this tuning for slide playing, where open tunings make it possible to play a full chord with the just the slide. F tuning (FCFA) is another "slack" tuning which can be used for slide; I've used it to play "Cock of the North" a Scottish bagpipe tune - having the same note, F, on two strings allows one of them to ring constantly, like a bagpipe drone. I hope this helps!
@danielibnz10 күн бұрын
@@jonsukulele I see… sometimes they are also called “open tunings”, like the F (FCFA) you mention, prone and good to be used for slide, indeed. Many Thanks.

The original is an Irish song written by Peader Kearney who wrote the Irish National Anthem: Erin !

@jonsukulele2 ай бұрын
For info, this is a super-cheap K-mise banjolele made in China, there's a review of it on my channel. It's really well-made for the price - to be honest there's nothing subtle about a banjolele so I would never stump up a lot of money for an expensive one. I removed the back and stuffed a t-shirt inside to muffle the sound - that way it still sounds like a banjo but has much more mellow sound.

@jonsukulele2 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! I've never heard Play Minstrel Play (I'll look it up now) but it doesn't surprise me that Blackmore would have used it for inspiration. If there had been a Spotify in the 17th century, this tune would have been constantly up in the top ten!

I know why I can’t do harmonics now. My uke only has 12 frets
@jonsukulele2 ай бұрын
Natural harmonics are played over the twelfth fret, so no problem for your uke. You can still play artificial harmonics too, but it's more difficult to find the exact position without the frets. You have to imagine where the 13th, 14th etc frets would be if you had them!
