Hi, is the slip clay food safe? I ask because I know this type of clay have some extra additives and the informations I found are very confusing. Some people stating clearly that this type of clay is not food safe while others are just avoiding a straight answer. Thank you!

the real problem is the tension during free motion... I have a Bernina 707 but seems I'm not able to get the tension right... on the bottom there's always nests of thread... one day I'll get there though 😅😅😅😅😅

When do you need to fire the cups? I'm planning to do a slip casting project but I don't have a kiln at home and studios don't allow slip casting. I was wondering how much time I have between creating my items and when they have to be fired?

Oh how nice and steady =). As an 18 year old apprentice working for the Spode group we used to cast 100 dozen cup and mug bodies a day on piece work. Part of your apprenticeship moving on to fancies like pomanders and strawberry baskets with basic figurines. At the age of 21 you finally got to be qualified and got full money. Most castors ended their working days mopping floors too broken to do the job they trained for anymore. Some of the things I have made I'm proud of and will no doubt be the antiques of the future, but I thank God my children never had to work in the pottery industry.

My question, Is casting two parts (the handle and the base) and attaching the handle to the base easier then casting a mug with the handle? I'm guessing there is less trimming involved? Which method would be easier for a total beginner with a minimum amount of guidance?

Good Morning! I'm only here because I need to congratulate you for the philanthropy of this video and because you were one of the teachers who took away years of curiosity and research, often frustrated... After I saw your video, I just need to practice and then produce my own pieces. , I am now going to dive into this charming universe that is the art of ceramics, I may not even become a world-renowned ceramist, however I know that I will be a good craftsman in what I will do and put on display so that your video can delight the eyes of all those future viewers who somehow come to see the contents of what I will post, And I would be very happy if you (with all due respect) could give me an answer, even if it's just a sentence in this humble comment of mine, just for me be sure that the impact it had on this plastic artist here in Brazil came to your knowledge.....

Bom dia!

The stitch is like the one used for Brazilian dimensional embroidery, in other words, button hole stitch fox dimensional embroidery. Beautiful work.

Amazing video! What's the purpose of the kiln shelf on the top of all the glazed bisque ware? It's not supporting anything so does it just help with heat distribution or something?

That’s when it’s food safe. The glaze she put makes it food safe and then it needs to be fired in order to finish the process

i like how people throw. "hand made" when it's a slip cast. It's not really hand made..
@merissahyltonart

Everything's still done by hand. The slip is hand poured and hand trimmed. The handle is attached and all the finishing done by hand.

so I guess it's also not hand made when you use a tool to smooth out the surface on a potters wheel? lol
