So peaceful to listen to this and reminisce about the old days. Five of my sons were martyred fighting the unholy Ottomans in far off Hungary. Our landgrave sent my other sons to fight some fellows in Augsburg who were trying to read the Bible in German. Took my daughters to listen to a traveling bard who laid down some of these jams at the alehouse. Six days later we all passed by way of the pox. Our bishop outlawed cats to stop the affliction from spreading further.

If you analyse the painting further you can actually see hints hinting that the wife was already dead during the making of the picture. The man let the portrait be drawn after his wife died to remember her. We had the painting in art class.

Additional fun fact about this discovery- the church was VERY against it! Even though he viewed himself as a catholic, the Catholic Church viewed him as a heretic for “trying to disprove the Bible”. There were several points in the Bible describing the sun as being in the heavens, earth being at the center, people praying to control day and night during battle, etc. There was one priest who even went so far as to say Copernicus claiming the sun was at the center was the same as saying “Jesus was not born to a virgin”. They took it VERY seriously that the Earth was not the center of the universe and for some reason I find that a little funny 😅
@ArtwithBen
@ArtwithBen Ай бұрын
The bible doesn’t make this claim, but it was a widespread belief held by many - including the church. Copernicus initially had the support of the church to publish his findings and give lectures on it. But it was eventually deemed a threat to the church’s authority (not the Bible’s authority!) Within the Catholic church, a decision was eventually made to ban the teaching of this discovery. Protestants were more tolerant of the teaching which makes sense as the denomination is younger than the discovery!

@@ArtwithBen the controversy over his theories didn’t start right away, it took some years for the church to really start to get mad about it, but the Bible definitely does make those claims. Psalms 19:4 “god has made a home for the sun in the heavens” Joshua 10 is the story of a battle and in verses 12 and onward it says Joshua prays to the lord for the sun to stop and the moon to halt to allow more light for battle: “So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies." (Verse 13) this is the one that really ruffled feathers because it was like Copernicus was claiming a recorded miracle didn’t actually happen And it’s believed that the “earth is at the center” theory all started with the description of the “three tiers” in genesis 16 (“the waters below, the heavens above, and the earth at the center”) ALTHOUGH this one heavily depends on which version of the Bible someone is reading since they are all translated differently. (Ps- I should also point out I’m not even technically religious. I just have read the Bible before out of interest and am a huge history nerd about the 1400s-1600s specifically)
@ArtwithBen
@ArtwithBen Ай бұрын
@@hannahbarrett1221 Interesting! While I disagree that those verses are making that claim, it would be interesting to see evidence that the church thought so! Re: Psalm 19, it is a song written by King David. It’s wrong to treat it as a scientific statement. Similarly re: Joshua 10 - the sun doesn’t really rise, the earth spins. But we still say sunrise. (Joshua or some scribe or later author wrote that the sun stopped.) Genesis - those tiers are true! It is speaking of the earth, not the universe. What do you think?

Some random facts: Since he is holding hand with his left, he is marrying left (idk how you say it in english) That means he is marrying someone below his social status. Also, the dog is a symbol of Loyalty. But its missing in the Mirror. Another weird thing is that you can see something black coming from the woman. Theres a theory that explains both the dog and the black thing: She cheated on him.

The dog and not holding hands might indicate more that time passed, maybe the two are getting married in the painting, and receiving guests in the mirror? It'd be incredibly difficult to paint a dog in the mirror since it probably wouldn't hold still

That might be juicy gossip. Arnolfini (the man in the painting) commissioned Jan van Eyck for this portrait. If Eyck knew of the bride's unfaithfulness it would be bold to paint it in without Arnolfini's knowledge. If Arnolfini knew, it would be even stranger to have it preserved in paint at great expense!
