Glen Hansard set up Jeff Buckley's debut concert at Sin E so he had a pretty critical hand in the song's popularity. Marketa combined two halves if two different verses there, which kind of threw me. One of the nice things about this song is how modular and customizable it is. You can choose from so many verses, so every time I hear a new cover it's like I'm waiting for a big reveal. But it's such a damn shame that so many people end on "Well maybe there's a God above" and ditch "I did my best, it wasn't much." That verse was written as the climax of the song, and whichever verses you sing, they all bring up feelings which lead up to and are completed by that grand finale. Closing on "Well maybe" always feels like petering out before the finish line.
