I’ve used joint compound on very large canvases. I gesso the canvas, when the compound is dry I gesso over that before adding color. It hold up years.

Brilliant.Loved it. I like your ability to talk fluently to camera snd your evident passion about the whole thing. I'm exploring the roads that lead away from watercolour into more opacity, particularly for portraits and figures. Having learnt of the existence of casein from James Gurney's channel, I came here via the usual route. You've certainly made a very informed call on casein. I'll look for others of your product dissections and explanations that might help me on my way. Since I have already ordered some of the casein that bears a connection to to J. Gurney, and I know what great things he can conjure up 'en plein air', I'll give it a go... when Ive plucked up the courage to open them. I'll certainly remember your brush warning as and when I do!

It’s true, some of the colors have a significant separation issue - that was a big initial surprise to me, as the smell got all over my hands and work surface, … though not in my paper. I, too, noticed the issue with staining brushes, but I’ve been experimenting with less expensive synthetic brushes so I didn’t ruin any of my watercolor brushes. That being said, highly absorbent, water-retaining brushes aren’t what I’d want to use with this paint anyway. I found that a sta-wet palette and mister spray was great for casein and I could leave the painting and come back later to pick up where I left off. Some of the pigments are really powerful. So that is a learning challenge there. But, I like this paint in my collection of watercolor and gouache. I’ve liked the results: It was effective as an underpainting. The opaque quality comes in very handy, as does the drying time. I sometimes use transparent washes and block-ins with watercolor and finish a painting with casein. The look is very attractive to me. It’s like using an oil paint without those chemicals and it’s like acrylics without the plastic look. I understand that it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m sticking with it - really fun to work with when you accept the “issues” you’ve noted. Using it means that it’s a bit of a novel look in a sea of artists using other mediums. I just hope they keep making it. I have a hankering for experimenting more with it.

You can add a finish to casein that will give you a look similar to oils. You can go glossy, semi-glossy, or even keep it matte. Also, you may not have been getting good darks because pthalo is transparent (it’s also a staining pigment). Ultramarine blue vibes me great darks.😊

My recommendation is to buy a separate set of brushes for the casein paint. I do a similar thing within my own Studio of not mixing brushes between media for the most part. My watercolor oil and acrylic brushes are all separate

Theres something nostalgic about your art style. Heavily reminds me of storybooks I remember reading in my 90s childhood lol I saw your other video and was impressed and thought I’d see what other treasures you may have hidden on your page. This digital piece says alot to me. Feeling small in a world so big, but just enough to be seen. While that may not be the artist intent, its simply my interpretation of how it makes me feel

Interesting interpretation. The little people are a staple in my work, and each piece tells something of a story with them. That story isn't exclusive though and I'm always excited to hear what others see in the imagery.

I can imagine a situation where client telling you their budget is ok, and then you say if you can do anything for that amount or not. But yeah, in that case, you're deciding on the details of the subject. For any service providing, crafter, artist and so on, it's important that you're clear about what's covered (how many iterations, and when you're starting billing for more), plus you should take enough money in advance to cover all needed materials, as a minimum. Simple contract is also helpful where it's stated what'll be used, time expectations, and especially - reflecting how any change after time point x will shift delivery time for y. Or simpler - just sell work you already have and not take commissions - I think that's insanely easier approach :D

Thank you for doing this! (and you confirmed my suspicions - you can't beat the prices they get for raw materials, if nothing because you'll be buying in kilos, but they buy in tons). It's similar in DIY home cleaning products and cosmetics. Basically, unless you have crazy good reason to make own (allergies are a very good one, or thing you just can't get in your country, either because no one is shipping there or import costs are crazy high, or you need specific measures / fit), consider ALL DIY as a money spending hobby, and forget about doing it to save money. You'll save the most by buying on sales AND using up everything you have - every bottle that expires / gets mold / dries out (and even raw ingredients DO expire) is money wasted. It's hard lesson to learn :) I'm still failing regularly, but much less than before :D There are few situations where it can be money / space saving - when it's about dissolving some powder (or diluting higher concentration) in water, if nothing else, powder will be less heavy and you can mix with water from the pipes, so no need to drag all that water in ready to use products (and paying for bunch of containers, preservatives and marketing). Like citric/sulfamic/acetic acid, or baking/washing soda as cleaning products. That's roughly about it from what I've gathered so far - the moment you need several components and the water isn't 90-99% of it, chances are that yours will be significantly more expensive. It's fine to have expensive hobbies and learn a ton. However, I do agree with you, people are just repeating stuff like parrots from each other on social media and not doing even basic math to see cost-benefit analysis. Or ignoring basic chemistry, like with that myth of mixing lemon acid and baking/washing soda as the best DIY cleaning solution which floods the internet. They don't get it - if you have to scrub, your product is NOT chemically working! I like my products to do the job by themselves, and I just wipe - like a magic ;) And also, socials are filled with beginners who tried something preaching to beginners who didn't try that this is the next best thing, even if it's not, because they're either incompletely informed or paid. Great video I've seen these days about how people are basically just ad creators and ad consumers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6SVlatsp9aigKc

When I stumbled on your part 1 video I went looking if there's more :D it's incredible that you've shared your story, and stuff that helped you. I actually went the other way around, I tried to improve my environment - decluttering and organising, and realised that so many advices that work for me, usually come from someone with adhd, so I looked into it and oh yeah, that's me. One thing you didn't mention, and I'm struggling with and can't find much ideas about it is regarding painting and setting up environment and routines for success. Like, acrylic painting, set up and clean up is SO cumbersome that it definitely impacted the amount of me painting, better said, why I lost energy from initial burst and didn't touch it for two years :/ And now I did one painting, it was fun, but still, set up and tear down is like a axe waiting to fall on my head. Except stay wet palette, is there any other thing that you do to reduce amount of cleaning, or how to paint over several days with ability to just continue. Like, how to make brushes not dry out, any tip to arrange workspace, anything you can think of? I do have a room with tables that's just for me so I can leave stuff out there. But since acrylics dry so fast, I can't just leave it out there. And for other medias you might use, any helpful tip will be appreciated :)

Having a dedicated space to create can go a VERY long way. You don't nessesarily have to always have you paint out, but it should still be accessible. For my my studio is my place to escape and to be able to think clearly. 9 times out of 10 I'm not even painting, just walking around my table in circles, jamming to music, and thinking about stuff. Just being in the space is freeing to me. It took me a long time and my own house to be super comfortable in my space completely. As far as how it's set up...well that's very specific to the needs of my workflow, my personality, and the tools I have. I think everyone's set up will be different based on those things. Motivation for me is such a mixed bag. It's why I usually only paint on the weekends unless I get really excited about an idea. Never feel obligated to paint on some kind of schedule. Every artist is different when it comes to finding the right time to work (my "how to be an artist" series touches on some of these things). And sometimes you just lose interest in a piece and have to scrap it/repurpose it into something new. For clean up it depends on how you paint and the scale, but when I need to I'll cover a palette in plastic wrap which will keep the big piles wet for a few days. Most of the time I work in smaller batches of paint so clean-up is simply just about dumping the water and washing brushes. Usually I scrape any remaining paint into a jar (makes a nasty grey color after a while), and reused if as base layers and a tinting color for later. It's important to only squeeze out the paint a little at a time rather than trying to do everything at once (especially for acrylics). The remaining dried paint on my palette acts as a reference point (4-8 of them at a time sometimes). That way I know exactly what colors I was using and what those mixes look like for next time (which is usually the next weekend). Very rarely will I scrape those palettes clean until the piece is done. The dedicated space also makes clean up easier as you don't nessesarily have to clean up. Quite often I just let everything sit (though I know that's not the best solution for most people). As for other media well I could write a book. But I'll hold out for individual questions for the time being. XD
