I was in the second grade when the ship sank. When I first heard the song Gordon Lightfoot sounded like he was half under water. I heard people in the background saying "Hey! Quit shoving!"

While the Atlantic and Pacific have much rougher waters, Lake Superior cannot be taken lightly, ever. It's known for 80 MPH winds, 40+ foot waves, and rocky shores. There are parts that are 50 to 200 feet of sheer rock with zero shore and deep water right up to the rock so the waves can reach quite high at the Pictured Rocks. Seeing videos of those waves without knowing where they were someone would be excused for being amazed that they're on a lake and not the ocean. The Witch of November can be an unforgiving event.

My husband is so into this Edmund Fitzgerald stuff he's got me watching it. He's got his own theory of the disasters cause, he thinks the hatchways behind the pilothouse collapsed and sent it straight to the bottom before the crew even had a chance to react. He says the hold was leaking the whole time from damaged hatches and coamings, he thinks one of the spare props damaged the vents and railings too. He says thats why the captain had his pumps running but it did no good, the water was in the hold not the ballast tanks. So Gordon Lightfoot had it right all along.

Watching her slipping down the slipway into the water and the raised sounds of the instruments and Gordon started to sing is my favorite part of this video

how many of you think there should also be a song like this for the Titanic?

This is one of my favorite songs of that era. It's just a perfect ballad. I've watched a documentary about the Edmund Fitzgerald, and it is heart-breaking.

I grew up and lived in downstate Illinois when this happened and when this song came out, and I really didn't grasp that this happened to a modern ship on the great lakes until much later - thought the song was about an old wooden ship, because I didn't realize the great lakes could get so fierce. Now I share it every Nov 10th.

God. I can’t imagine the feeling of knowing you’re going to die. Especially on a ship as you desperately try to keep her from sinking. Then you see that one wave that you just know you aren’t going to survive and….just have to accept that it’s the end. I can’t imagine just staring up at the wall of water that’s about to sink your ship then getting slammed against the deck, washed overboard, or pulled into the whirlpool that a sinking ship creates. Terrifying

RIP to those who passed, being born in the modern world in the 2000s, 5 days after the day they sunk, my Step Grandpa worked as a ship worker that helped assemble ships up in Superior Wisconsin, he played this song for me and this last year he passed, thanks to him I know of this song and the men who lost their lives that day. RIP to them and Gordon Lightfoot, and thank you Grandpa for bringing this song to those of the new generation to remember them

Active duty Marine here. Been in 5 years. As some of you know, today is also the Marine Corps Birthday. When I was growing up in Wisconsin, I always remembered November 10 as the day Old Fitz sank. Nowadays every 10 November is both a happy and sad day. One side of me is celebrating the marine corps birthday, the other side is remembering the day that 29 men were lost to Lake Superior’s ice water mansion

I think I’ve watched this video every anniversary since it came out. Truly one of the more mysterious, and sad mysteries of the Great Lakes. May those 29 men, those aboard the Anderson and Ford who joined the search who have since passed, and Gordon Lightfoot, who’s responsible for this song. Also, does anyone know where the news broadcast footage at the beginning is from?

I grew up in Glen Arbor, on Lake Michigan. November storms can be terrifying. Fresh water waves peak closer together than on the ocean, I believe because of the lack of dissolved salt, and I’ve often heard that this was part of what took the Edmund Fitzgerald down (unsupported boat weight). I’ve been out in a fishing boat in 10-footers before (we turned around and went back to port) - the face height of 10 footers can be up to 20 feet. It’s hard to imagine the courage and resolve of the men who were out in storm waves 3 times that size.
