I love how you use the animals' senses in your act. The amount of work and dedication it takes to train them really makes it all magic.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the sound effects being played are slightly different for a correct and incorrect item, and the dolphin was trained to respond to the different one.

I think that the first suspicion Penn had was the correct one. Some animals can see colors that we can't, so the papers may look identical for people, but they might be different for chickens :P

Okay, it is great, great, really, but Alyson's totally GENUINE blunt reaction at 3:51 is what made her the BEST host of this show. She was the PERFECT (adorable, beautiful, funny, spontaneously clever...etc) but still EVERYMAN character to host this show. :D

4:59 he was able to see the back of the tile. Could have memorized the wood grain on the back of each tile and then planted a treat or switched the tile in the pyramid

I would think he did something to the hamster to make it choose while covering it with hat and the back of the tiles have specific wood grains to know which is which and in the pyramid there could be some switch in the reveal as there were more choices possible per destination

While the trick is great, I think the joke about identifying as a dolphin is done in poor taste. What you are essentially doing is undermining the trans movement by playing with the strawman argument the transphobes parrot all the time. I am not going to go into detail here why it's a strawman argument (yes, even the chromosome argument), just wanted to point this out.

All I can say is that nothing is ever done for no reason. I suspect that you or someone you know has some programming experience.

Amazing trick and training, i know you wont tell how it was done ;) but combining gloves, hat, tiles, even the sme.../mindreading on tellers head might put the nose into the right direction :)

The real stars are the animals. Their ability to learn simple tasks and perform them on command is the key to all of Jo's magic tricks. In this case , i guess the hamsters sense of smell is used. Thats why both have to wear gloves, to not contaminate the sample blocks

This act ruined P & T for me...

One possible way of doing it: All the tiles have the same fish symbol on them, but they have something painted over that with a special friction or heat-sensitive ink. The top layer of ink rubs off or fades away when they are mixing up the tiles. This means no matter what Teller chooses, it will ultimately be the fish symbol. The hamster is simply trained to go to the same spot every time, likely with a reward of food.

My guess: each tile is scented differently, and the hamster is trained to follow the event in the maze. Because the hat touches both tellers head and the tile, when the hamster goes on tellers head it gets the correct scent and then follows its training to grab the correct tile.

Most people know that Penn refers to himself as “carney trash” and that Teller is the actual magician of the two. What most people don’t know is that Penn can communicate with animals telepathically. The only problem is that the hamster speaks Flemish and Penn doesn’t. Otherwise he’d have figured it out.

My only thought is that the chicken can pick up on the "drying time" of the ink on the paper. If there are no funny smells with the marker or any extra inking on the first paper, it's maybe a drynesss comparison. Or, perhaps, the chicken picked up the woman's natural scent a bit longer for the first one aince that was the most time spent on one card.

My hats off to Jo, once he flips that switch he is always unstoppable. Fooling Penn and Teller is like a maze for most but Jo and his hamster have the path to that trophey memorized.

I watched enough magic to know 5:12 is where the "magic happens". However when you put the hamster to the maze it does not look like it is after a smell rather going to pre trained place probably trained with "chaining" (as it searches for food every step) the ones know about reinforment learning will understand. So I do not know why did the hamster needed to get the smell from the hat if it was going to go to a pre trained location. Also the gloves indicate scented tiles as well. Go figure you gave me a very nice puzzle I feel like the hamster myself.

My bet's on some kind of time delay ink, maybe the table heats up a bit. All the dancing and resurrecting the hamster is about buying time for that process to work, and not be hot to the touch.
