I need to make a rubber band powered cardboard card, with wheels and axles of any material, that can drag a 1N (about 100 grams) weight behind it on a flat sled at least 5 cm behind the car. The car can have up to 500 grams weighting it on the body of the car . Any tips for making sure the car can pull all the weight?

The main issue will be getting enough grip from your wheels, so you will probably need rubber tyres. Next point will be gearing. You don't necessarily need a gearbox, although that would help you get more power to the back wheels. Instead of a gearbox, you can use relatively small wheels and a relatively large axle to wind your rubber motor round. The bigger the diameter of the axle, the "lower" the gear you are in, so the heavier the object you can pull. I did this video on the maths back in 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn_GcmNqpM95ZtU

Hi there, Grandad. I have the mate to your Sky Surfer from my grandson that he broke. I have glued it back together but never gave it back to him. I must give it long think on how to soften the hit the tail gets at launch. I was thinking of a small bit of soft foam or cotton ball taped to the pusher pad. I am sure weaker rubber bands would work. But it is nice to see you getting some use and fun out of it. Take care.

@Sea-Dog5496 I always check the "held for review" folder. If I didn't, I would miss half the comments. KZbin algorithms tend to catch innocent comments and miss the important ones. My 9pm publications on my main channel always get a comment from an automated porn bot. It is a new one every night, the bot creates a new channel and spams publications with seemingly harmless comments, but the thumbnail is the same each time and the channel is simply a link to an external porn site. As they use the same images every time, I cannot understand why KZbin can't write an algorithm that spots it as soon as it is created and blocks it immediately. A cynical person might think KZbin is happy to play along with it as it will make their stats look good with new channels created every night to boost KZbin's numbers.

Hi Ed. There is another video tomorrow with some replacement rubber bands. I did this video about a week ago, but scheduled the publication for today. Since then I have been hunting for suitable replacement bands. I could order them online, but I was hoping to find some in local shops. It looks like the size of rubber bands I wanted are no longer stocked anywhere. Then today I found I had a box of suitably sized ones in my own stock.

I'm getting closer... what I'm after is a design that will run in one direction until it strikes a wall/hard object, then reverse direction. In theory it sounds fairly simple but most of my designs thus far have not worked out as well as I expected. Not so easy to design a reliable mechanism to trigger the direction reverse.
@Putarubberbandonit
@Putarubberbandonit Ай бұрын
I assume you are talking rubber band powered. I would guess you would need gearing to make a reverse feature. I vaguely remember a toy mechanism with 3 gears where the "middle" gear only engaged in one direction. The gear shaft rode in a slot and one of the other gears must have too, so the outer gears engaged for forwards, and the third gear dropped in for reverse. In a similar, but different, gearbox on some pullback toys they have an action to wind up the spring when you pull it back, and engage an extra gear when it drives forwards

This one was best design since it uses maximum stretching ability of rubber. In other models most rubber gets unused
@Putarubberbandonit
@Putarubberbandonit 2 ай бұрын
@motherisape Yes, but there is a trade-off. You lose some power due to the friction of the bearings and gears. Obviously, if money is no object, you could invest in proper bearings and low friction nylon gears. If you have a single band and you want to maximise the stretch without wrapping it around the axle, use a long chassis and use string to go from the band to the axle. That way, it is the string that goes round the axle, and none of the band stretch is wasted 👍

Hello! do you have a car that is specifically fast? thats easy to make, I really need it for a project
@Putarubberbandonit
@Putarubberbandonit 2 ай бұрын
Fast is mainly about power and grip. Plenty of rubber bands for power and rubber tyres for grip. If the tyres wheelspin then you are just wasting the power. You can also add weight to the back of the car to help the wheels grip. Small wheels will give you faster acceleration. Large wheels will give you a faster top speed but take longer to get there.

That depends on how you define "working". It flies a bit, but it is not likely to disappear into the distance miles away. Not every configuration works, some work better than others. It is intended to help you learn about trimming the settings and trying different layouts to see what works best. If you don't try, you will never know.

Hmmm, maybe stiffer and larger rubberbands can make it go further. Also lighter and larger wheels can help increase the distance
@Putarubberbandonit

Hi, Lynn. Yes, larger stiffer rubber bands would give it a faster burst of power. However, soft hobby grade rubber as used in model aeroplanes would allow more turns so it would run for longer. A more aerodynamic propeller would help, too. The difference in wheels is demonstrated in the video. The toy car wheels certainly reduced the distance travelled👍
