It's that time of year again, time to deck the halls, light a blazing fire, pour a wee dram and put St Jacob's Undomskor Christmas performances on repeat, again.

Yes, among the dozen or so that I have heard, this is one of the most moving. This is especially astonishing considering the fact that both classical choral music and faith in God are considered irrelevant by many in the 21st century. This music is a genuine blessing to humanity and, I pray, to God in Heaven who longs to know us and express His love for us.

Wow, I left a comment on this video 8 years ago. It must have been one of the first comments I made on my account as I made it 8 years ago. I was 13/14 then, now I am 22 and this special special magical music is still a part of me. I appreciate the purity of the original SA piece, but this SATB arrangement isn’t performed enough! Us men deserve to revel in such beauty as well!!

Was looking for a choral piece for 2024 to capture the ineffable beauty of the incarnation and this is it. Absolutely sublime. Thank you.

We sang this in my school choir when I was in 7th grade in California (enlightened choir director!). I sang the Yonge Child solo as a boy soprano. I was a bit scared, but ever since this has been a most special piece for me. It transports me back to the young me. And it was one of many formative musical experiences that made me a professional musician. I went into classical piano performance and now teach at a university in California. You don’t have to be a professional to know that there is something special about this piece of music.

Without the score in front of me, I cannot comment on the tempo used by this conductor. I will say, it seemed to fit the context of the piece. Might a different tempo be acceptable? I would say yes, it is up to the conductor to come to terms with the composers wishes. Oh, and what a glorious place to perform. And the cello, well, what can one say. Simply amazing. Just the right amount of tension and passion with each pull of the bow. I shall reserve comment on the conductors style with a simple nod to each their own. I loved it. Listened three times in a row and made new discoveries with each hearing. Those in the room listening seemed to be swept up in the beauty of the piece. Yes, Ola is amazing. Love his work.
