I wonder if Marc Laidlaw got inspired by Heaven’s Gate cult. Especially when Breengrub calls his host body a vehicle.

Shu'ulathoi being controlled by a parasite into being evil is such a twist and yet such a beautiful one that I hope it becomes "canon." I don't like the idea of G-Man being one though he always seemed very third party, and considering Breen said "Your contract is open to the highest bidder." quotes and ominous lines like that are what Half Life and Valve games overall are about, some greater ominous horror lurking behind the walls of every game. G-Man being something middle of the way who has his own interests that we have not been introduced to yet is the best way to go about him. That there's always a bigger fish vying for influence over the universe.

This is the best Halflife content I have encountered since Epistle 3. Thank you for putting this together.

Marc Laidlaw unironically inspired me to become a writer myself. He has such a tight grip on deep existantial themes that you won't find in any other game or movie. It would be an unforgiveable shame if Valve were to disregard the lore Marc original wrote for the Half Life/Portal universe.

This is one of top 5 half life videos for sure. Unrelated rant, but on the matter of common complaints i hear from different people about HLA...valve already retconned HL2 with Episode 1/Aftermath. It would have been nice if a short episode three tied up the HL2 arc with some of epistle 3's ideas (remember, Laidlaw himself said it was a hodge podge of ep3 draft ideas and metacritique of his industry experience, not cut and dry canon), but its been made pretty clear this year by valve devs that the decade+ of radio silence on half life was because they were trying perfect Source 2 because theyre envisioning an experience as radical and fresh as HL1 was.
@macdrown3892Ай бұрын
I think valve could have made Laidlaw's story into a quick 4-chapter game with relatively little effort and I'm disappointed they didn't.

So basically everytime breen is transformed to other host body he's losing some of his memories and he's gaining some new. Sounds like brainwashing process to slowly change his personality so that breens main focus is to obtain more knowledge and power, there's no more breen, who was that?
@BananJumperАй бұрын
About the description, I think Marc pushed valve into what we got at the end of HL:A. They had to change everything, if marc havent released epistle 3 then valve would probably just change some details without changing story too much.
@macdrown3892Ай бұрын
@@BananJumper that much is clear. The question is, was that the best course of action?

@@macdrown3892 To be honest, i don't know. I'm fine with story change as Marc's idea for ending was sooooo depressing, fitting but still depressing. I'm total wuss, I want a happy ending after all those years.

Breen was killed, and a backup of his mind was activated, loaded into an advisor grub. This is expanded upon in Marc Laidlaw’s story treatment for episode three

Even through such an unimaginable existential nightmare Breen's scientific nature of inquiry, deconstruction, and theory persists. A wonderful detail that shows the depth of his brilliance, flawed as he may have been. Most any other human's mind would have broken under such stress.

Perhaps in a last bid to survive, G-man, and his peers and employers, decided to refine and shape the parasitic thoughts dormant within them all to emerge from his pupal form as entities that could use psychic abilities and dreams to bring merely even a fraction of their dreamy, metaphysical power into the real world, to escape the confines of the Combine invaders.
