Nice job! All three pieces sounded very nice, though you played Bonnie Blue Flag a bit like I imagine a Yankee would - a little too fast, and a little too well...

I have southern ancestry as well as Yankee. My first request when I was learning mandolin was "Dixie. My paternal grandmother was born in Mississippi and that's where I got my musical genes. Up north there's no cultural context in which to play southern tunes. Too fast, too slow-- we don't know any better, I guess.

Wonderful to stumble on your channel, Will! I still have the Hartford Fiddle Tune Book you gave me ages ago after I won a photo contest with a picture of you... The book helped inspire me to buy a mandolin and start learning tunes, starting with Liberty and Over the Waterfall! (Came in third in a local contest with that last one last summer. Shows where 30 years of practice can get someone, even with a late start and little talent!)

Nice to hear from you, Bob! I don't know the ins and outs of KZbin. I should have checked the comments last year, but I only discovered them now. I'm writing a fiddle method and may use your contest-winning photo if it's OK with you. My email is [email protected] .
