What a feeling that must have been for Aldo. His first winners medal against a backdrop of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. The only thing that will have beaten that will be winning the FA Cup with the reds three years later.

So desperately sad that Joey has left this world, and hopefully that he is at peace wherever he is. An unbelievable player, my hero as a young lad in the Beech Road, if only he loved himself as much as Oxford loved him. Sleep well Joey x

Little Les Phillips...he came to our pub in Brixton a few days after scoring in the Semi Final v Villa. His brother lived in the area, and I ended up working for him. Lovely bloke, unfortunately his knees were never that good and he ended up in non league football. Still an early hero of mine though.

I used to sit just above the dugout at the Manor ground and remember Ken Fish. He used to sit on a small stool, next to a bucket of water. If a player went down, sponge in bucket, and then run onto the pitch trailing water behind him. A far cry from the portable A&E units physios carry onto the pitch these days in multiple holdalls.

I am not an Oxford fan, but remember that they were a fine side back then and Maurice Evans had them playing some very attractive football. Around 86 or 87 I found myself at a loose end in London on a Saturday and went along to watch Wimbledon-Oxford at Plough Lane. I think it attracted one of the lowest ever top tier gates, but the football on show was excellent. Ray Houghton was outstanding for Oxford.

Around this time, my father worked in IT and got VIP tickets for this through the Oxford Utd sponsor, Wang. At 11 years old, I WILL NEVER forget leaving the restaurant / bar area to go to our seats and see around 90,000 people cheering and waving flags. That will stay with me until I die.

Sorry of course there were sponsers coz it was the Milk cup. But the victors did not go behind their billboard for the team photo. That's what I meant!
@derekgraham358111 жыл бұрын
No sponsers, no announcer telling the fans when to cheer, no protocol. The days when the cup winners used to do a lap of honour around the WHOLE of the perimeter without the hassle of security men with microphones wired to their ears and men in hi vis jackets!

Similar - Tottenham, but was at Oxford from 1985 to 1988, the three top flight years. I wellrun to this great day at Wembley. We also tweaked many a big club's nose, including a 3-0 win over Arsenal to stay up, beating ManYooo 2-0 in Fergie's first game (and singing 'You're gonna get the sack' at him, funny how things turn out), another Milk Cup run later and all ending in the inevitable relegation. A great three years.

This takes me back. I am a West Ham fan, but I was a student in Oxford from 1983 -1986. I adopted them as my second team. It was a great three years. First Year - Third division champions Second Year - Second division champions Third Year - league cup Good to see them back in league 2

@derekg1241 yeah wasn't brilliant was he? To think they had Peter Hucker in the squad at that time, he should have played unless he was injured. Hucker actually went on to join Oxford a season or two later.

i was there that day brilliant day.remember coming back on the coach and seeing all the flags on the bridges and on the houses as we got closer to oxford.

I was there that day and it was one to forget for a Qpr fan. Wembely was so shit when watching from behind the goal, you needed a fucking set of binoculars to see the pitch. The cages got in the way and the police completely ruined it by standing in the way for much of the game. We were shit but credit to Oxford who were miles better that day.
