I laughed at the part where you say that "the How to Train Your Dragon series is great, even the TV shows... well except for two of them..." This was a super interesting discussion. As a child I was always fascinated with dinosaurs and reptiles, and dragons were an obvious extension of this. As I've gotten older my interests have broadened, as they do, but I've never really shook that childhood fascination. My interest in prehistoric life might actually give me some insight here, so I thought I'd share this; You're most likely familiar with the "Pterodactyl" (or Pteranodon). They're the flying reptiles often seen alongside (and mistaken for being) dinosaurs. These 'flying reptiles' belong within the extinct order of "Pterosauromorpha". Although the ancestry of pterosaurs is incomplete, we currently place them as very close relatives of the true dinosaurs. Both dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and crocodilians are all recognized to be within the clade "Archosauromorpha"- with pterosaurs being closer to dinosaurs grouped in the "Avemetatarsalia". So you wouldn't be completely wrong if you've ever called a pterosaur, "dino". Anyways, this is probably irrelevant to the discussion, and my point in bringing it up, yet here we are you still reading this comment and me writing it... lol What I'm trying to lead to is this: There's this specific Family within the order of Pterosauria, known as the "Azhdarchidae". The name formed from the Persian word 'azhdar', a Dragon-like creature from Persian mythology. As the name would rightfully imply, the members of this family included some of the largest pterosaurs. Actually, it included the largest known flying animals to ever be discovered. The largest of these members (Hatzegopteryx and Quetzalcoatlus if ur interested) have been found with remains estimated to have grounded-upright stances towering up to 16 feet. That's already the size of a Giraffe- And isn't even speaking about their wingspan, reaching lengths up to 40 feet. Obviously, these airplane sized behemoths don't exactly fill the role of a classical fire-breathing dragon. But, I do find their existing similarities striking. Plus, they were among the last surviving and most successful group of pterosaurs world-wide, up until the end of the Cretaceous period...... As amusing as it may be, these island-hopping Mesozoic dragons are unlikely to have survived the K-Pg event. But they definitely set a precedent for airborne lifeforms. That being? Nobody can deny that an animal could ever evolve to such sizes, yet take to the air anyway. Also wanted to add; I would suggest the idea that people of the distant past had wrongly identified animals they encountered as mythical creatures, and they'd do it commonly. If you look at medieval artworks that depict certain types of animals, well, you'd laugh- But if you take into context the time and place they were made, it starts to make a lot more sense. 13th Century artists in Europe would never come across anything like Elephants or Lions or Whales. They only worked off of brief stories and descriptions from travelers. The funniest ones I've seen are of Hippos and Crocodiles. But I could totally see ancient travelers encountering some strange animals and creating stories and artwork based upon their fear of the unknown. Now the intriguing part is finding out what exactly it is they saw. ...Unless it was just a reeaally creepy scorpion... Listen. I'll admit I may have had a little TOO much fun writing this. Can't blame a man like me for Having Fun. Right? 😁
