Hester is the most selfish, self-centered person i have ever encountered in fiction. It takes a wonderful actress to make her likeable. After many seasons, it does to grate on one, though.

There were lots of these cheap but charming comedies littered across the schedules all year round on BBC and ITV in the 1980s. See also: George & Mildred, No Place Like Home, May to December (also starring Anton Rodgers), That's my Boy, Me and My Girl, the follow-up to this, French Fields, Watching, Duty Free, A Fine Romance... so many great comedies, they just seemed to quietly peter out in the 1990s as they fell out of fashion and soap operas took over their prime-time slots, although My Family had a surprisingly long run for this style of comedy.
