I have 2 of these in a pretty high end set up. Audio physic main speakers. Mono amps. Dead silent pre. Top DAC. It’s a very good sounding system and decided to add these to see what they offer. They don’t add as much as REL have you believe. They are out to sell them as they are a business. In my honest opinion they add something, they are good, but not that much as their chief designer suggests or their dealers seem to suggest. Two of these set me back 5k uk pounds. Was the upgrade in sound worth 5k? Absolutely not. I don’t say this out of anger buying them as my dealer was extremely happy to take them both back for a full refund, as agreed. I decided to keep them and they look really nice too! I just want others to know that they should not expect miracles. It will improve the sound, but not that much.
@dingleonurroof2 ай бұрын
Are you sure you set them up correctly? I just bought them and had trouble myself until I realized you have to turn off any digital cross over your receiver may have built in. The sub is receiving your speaker signal, so any crossover in it's path will neuter almost all of their performance . Once I turned my towers to full range, the Rel shook my windows at 15% volume. I've come across a few people including a famous hi-fi reviewer setting them up incorrectly.

They sounded great for in-walls. They cabinet definitely helped control the frequency response when installed, but hurt bass extension. So I would suggest a subwoofer in pairing.
@1chrisrowe4 ай бұрын
@@MediaHead. Good to know. It's a small cabinet which is probably the reason for lack of bass extension. I talked to another manufacturer about building a sealed back box for their in-wall and they suggested a 1.76 cubic foot box, which was surprisingly large. They said it could go smaller, but you'd sacrifice extension.

Hi. I went to the REL website and went to their Speaker Pairing section. They recommended the Carbon Special with the 12 inch driver for my Focal Utopia Evo Colour bookshelves for my stereo setup. I am also worried about losing some of the lower mids/higher bass I’m tending to think the Carbon Special will leave a hole in that area. I’m thinking the S/510 is the better choice. What do you think?
@MediaHead.4 ай бұрын
Really depends on the room, as long as you entered the room size correctly i would follow their recommendation. The Carbon special driver is as light as the S510 driver while moving more air and having more power, so I doubt you would lose any performance in the lower mids.

Hey, I have JBL Arena, 6ic three pairs of speaker, so I want to play three stereo pairs in three rooms, so which amplifier do you suggest ? Speaker impedance is 8ohm and peak is 80watts
@MediaHead.5 ай бұрын
So, let it be known I would not recommend that for either two channel amp. Out of the two the Powernode is the only one I would ever do that two. The Sonos amp is NOT 2 ohm stable and the ONLY pair of speakers that you could get away with that with is the Sonos Sonance In-Ceiling speakers. If you connected your speakers to the Sonos amp you would IMMEDIATELY VOID THE WARRANTY on the amp. The powernode can handle 2 ohms over a period of time but you might encounter volume limits. Particularly because those speakers are very inefficient at 86db/m. Keep in mind these amps are only one zone, so if you are expecting to be able to control the zone's volume independently, you will not be able to do so as all will play together at a level volume.

A few things to consider. If you already have sonos then go with sonos, however, sonos doesnt play well with others. If audio quality is what you are going for I'd suggest bluesound. Have you phisycally tried the HT 1510 in your chain? If yes, have you used the Airship II to make the Predator ready for high level connection? This how I using it in my stereo system. With that the 1510 changes “nearly completely”, makes it more reactive and way quicker than with the standard RCA connection. I’m not saying that makes a better musical subwoofer than the S510 as I don’t have both to compare.
@andyburnett80128 ай бұрын
Yes the H T can be connected high level using the Air as you say, the sub is then receiving the same signal as your speakers are getting so reaction time is improved. The Air high level input then connects to the 1510 low level RCA input, with a bit of tweaking the H T will then be able to act like a standard REL high level input sub and be just as effective in two - channel as well as being an amazing A V sub.
@attilakovacs7738 ай бұрын
@@andyburnett8012 Yes, that's how I use it. I just wanted to highlight this to the creator of the video because with the Airship 2 this sub is a different animal than with the RCA. I've asked John Hunter on Saturday at the Bristol Hifi Show. He said if he would be asked to categorize the 1510 with airship as a musical sub, then he would say it's on the same level as the 812, but sounds different. He mentioned a customer who asked them to install a pair of 1510 with Klipsch Cornwall's and he said it's mind-blowing. Thanks for the video, it was the deciding factor for me to go with this soundbar. I had a Definitive Mythos XTR-SSa5 and Polk PSW108 sub hooked up to a receiver for about 10 years. Receiver died and I wanted to go with a soundbar set up. I looked at several, Bose, Polk, Sonos, Sennheiser, Nakamichi. I always liked the overall sound (tone) of the Sonos, but without the sub it's really lacking, and having to pretty much double the cost when adding their sub was always the reason I didn't get one. Being able to hook up any powered sub to the Bluesound is a huge plus. I installed mine this weekend, hooked it up to a Yamaha 10" sub, everything was plug & play, HDMI eARC to the soundbar, sub-out to the sub, connect to my wireless, update the firmware, and boom, it's up and running. A few little tweaks in the app, and it sounds as good, if not better, than my old set up...

It needs to be done in pairs unfortunately, you may want to consider investing more heavily in the front stage(soundbar or upgrading to bookshelves/in-wall and a subwoofer). I do not have a living space conducive to surround so I just invested in an upgraded front stage. Great stereo speakers setup correctly can get really close to the staging in entry or mid level surround systems for a similar cost.

I'm bringing this up more for the benefit of new REL owners because you know this already Mitchell, but John Hunter says that it won't do to just run in a new sub even for 24 hours at low or "normal" volume because the driver surround just won't soften up enough for optimum performance at normal listening volumes. Great review. My thoughts precisely when i had added my S/510 into my system...mind blown with many smiles that went on for days and days! I plan to add a second one to my system someday, but one has provided wonderful listening experiences the past two years. One negative is that the cabinet is painted in black lacquer...i.e., only black lacquer. In other words, there is no clear coat! As a result, you'll likely want to do what I did...namely, cover the top with a black vinyl film which can easily be removed if i ever decide to upgrade without fear of scratches being everywhere. That was needed because simply dusting will cause microscratches regardless of whether you're using a micofiber cloth. Why they did not add a clear coat defies logic (e.g., would allow you to polish out microscratches with ease). Keep up the great work. I'll look forward to seeing how you evolve your channel. Good luck.

Hey Artemis - I work in high end pro car detailing . . . if you are getting swirls and micro scratches you might want to upgrade your MF cloths - those too have levels of quality - a VERY plush M F used VERY lightly as a duster with NO pressure whatsoever, will be just fine . I've had NO issues whatsoever.

@davidbee8178 Hi David, I also am a car enthusiast and have all of the Rupes polishers (3x), pads, compound, etc., needed to run my own detailing business...my cars are very clean :-) With that said, and though your comment has merit, it's not that simple. This is not simple dust, it's CA dust, with a little particulate matter mixed in (we live in SoCal). My point is that the lacquer is incredibly soft. I had polished it to get the microscatches out, and then the following day had used a microfiber cloth to remove a simple smudge, and low and behold, it created more microscratches (there was some dust that had accumulated as well). It was at that point where it was clear this would be a losing battle, and so I polished again and then added black Vinyl film on top to completely protect the surface. You're right under normal circumstances, but the combination of environmental dust that I have with the soft lacquer finish makes for a challenging situation.
