A factor never mentioned in these tests is the sump capacity, I have had cars with 20,000 mile oil change schedules, although that sounds unusual it was great for convenience. I have not done a comparison but of course by carrying more oil the deterioration should be slower. My current car has 15,000 mile oil changes but I intend to change it far more often. With company cars the mentality is very different, we want minimal servicing and we don't care what happens to the engine at 100,000+ miles. My working cars were consumables, but now that phase of my life is over I want to look after my car, I even find myself changing other fluids to enhance the life of components....
@ferexx
@ferexx Күн бұрын
2:46 shouldn't this be explained as the longer oil change resulted in degraded oil with more suspension that accelerated wear? if the wear is linear then what's the point of lowering the OCI in the first place? i would expect the wear to get worse as the oil ages so the result actually confirms the need to change more frequently no?
@EndlessMoneyPits
@EndlessMoneyPits Күн бұрын
Is the wear linear? I always thought of it as being exponential.
@ferexx
@ferexx Күн бұрын
in the video they said "the engine only made about half as much iron and copper per mile as it did last time" and seemed to have concluded the high metal before was not due to higher OCI because it did not scale linearly...
@EndlessMoneyPits
@EndlessMoneyPits Күн бұрын
The third sample makes me question the second sample as it was in better condition with even more miles. So, wear does not appear to be linear to me. I also think the second sample seemed to be contaminated by the long OCI before the first sample.

Ok you make life too difficult for yourself. Simply leave the inner weights inside and go get a countersunk M6 60 screw to fit the stock inner weight. Then using the new screw, the guard and the weight and single spacer the job is done in 1 minute. Don't over think this simple installation.

should 30-35 mm on the sidestand .. so maybe 50-55 on a bike stand is good .. but i prefer do like manual say or if you want it perfect,. what i do i put enough pressure on rear spring with ratched strap,, and then tend the chain tight,, and then ,, take off the strap,, there you have the perfect slack,, dont put the strap around your exhaust,, 🙂 works for any bike,, kzbin.info/www/bejne/marXnIavhNaDY5Y

Regardless of the condition of the oil or the metals in the oil that indicate wear, there's more to it than that. There's an important factor that an oil test can't tell you. What is that you ask? It's the amount of sludge buildup within the engine. If that cars' oil has been changed at 15K miles or even 10k miles it's whole life, then I can only imagine what you will find under the valve cover/s.

first of all, oil is not cheap, it is ridiculous to simply waste money because you think something is cheap when kids are starving. i have already proved to me that you do not have to change oil more than about 20k, i have never changed oil more than that, and I have never seen anyone who can legitimately say they have blown an engine from not changing oil. that is ridiculous

Very interesting. I did the same test on my 2006 Saab 9-3 and got similar results but not the same. For 10,000 miles, the result was identical. For 5000 miles, I had a lot lower metal levels. At 7500 the metals rose substantially. I stayed with 5000 miles and I sold the car with about 200,000. It is now running with the second owner (I had it for 12 years through 2018) and has 290,000 on the original motor and transmission. It seems 5000 was good for that car.

It would be interesting to do another 10K analysis. 7500 looked better than 5000? Another 10000 might shed light on whether that was an anomaly or not. Perhaps the 5000 change cleaned the engine thus the improvement in the 7500 change? When comparing oil change intervals I think the ticket would be looking for linear degradation. If the analysis shows exponential wear then the interval is too long. IOW 75000 should show 1.5 degradation vs 5000 miles.

Great video, thanks, interesting results. And the BMW M50 2.8 is an absolute tank of an engine, my old housemate used to have one, and I kid you not, within 30 seconds of leaving the drive, he was bouncing it off the rev limiter. Winter, summer, it didn't matter, it got thrashed, that thing was still running perfectly at 200k when it was scrapped due to rusting to pieces. On top of that, the engine oil got changed 'whenever he felt like it' which usually meant every 15-20k miles!
