I had a friend who fell 5-stories and was badly injured but lived. His legs were loaded with pins, and one leg shorter than the other, but was otherwise healthy.

The best advice is to NOT use rocks near water to build a fire bed. Rocks that spend time in water often contain water, and when fire heats that water into steam, the rocks can explode. Avoid hot rock shrapnel, choose rocks far away from water.

Considering how fast you are moving at, this conclusion is no surprise. 1 G is 9.8 m/s/s. That might not sound like much, but a 9.8 M drop will have you impact the ground at 50 kilometer per hour.

The cactus you SHOULD look for is the Jumping Choya, its small pieces break off easily (it actually multiplies by breaking apart and sticking to anything that passes by), thus even a small knife or stick will let you get chunks off, but the chunks will be covered with spines, BURN the spines off and you have effeictivly a rubbery cucumber that can be chewed for water.

Another survival myth in deserts: rationing water. There are a lot of stories of people found dead in the desert with full bottles of water. Dehydration can hit you faster than it may seem. Also, being dehydrated may cause your brain not to function at 100%, leading to less-than-ideal decisionmaking.

Many claim highest and tallest have different definitions in regards to the 'highest' mountains... basically, they mean the same. In reference to S.L, Everest it is clear that Everest is both highest and tallest. Sea level is the most meaningful measurement standard. Most dissenters seem to be Americans desperately trying to redefine mountain magnitude to suit claims that Denali or Mauna kea are highest/tallest/biggest, despite the fact that both require different definitions to be considered greater. By those same flawed definitions, there are other mountains in the world that are arguably taller and higher than Denali and Mauna Kea.

A side tangent, I suppose, but one scenario that came to mind would be if explosives are involved. The shockwave would travel through water quite easily, and would likely devastate your body. I'm reminded of that Mythbusters episode about shooting fish in a barrel, and how effective Dynamite fishing is.

Fun fact: Gasoline is NOT flammable. Yes, that's right, I said gasoline is not flammable. Gasoline *vapor* is flammable and only when mixed with the right amount of oxygen. Gasoline will not burn in a vacuum. You basically said this in the video, just not as dramatically. However, lithium ion batteries found in electric vehicles (or in your cell phone you carry dangerously close to your crotch) *are* EXPLOSIVE! Think about that next time you get a text ;)

Over the years, as i watch the TWILIGHT ZONE, one in particular has become my favorite out of all the episodes : THE SHELTER , i watch it at least 4 times a yr since purchasing the DVD collection, and then another that i watch a lot is TIME ENOUGH, Burgess Meredith is in a Bank Basement when a Hydrogen Bomb goes off. And a film that gave me nightmares when i was younger : THE DAY AFTER , i had nightmares for years after seeing that film.

Fun fact: Studies concluded that how much weight you lose has to do with how you *feel* about your activity level, not how much activity you actually do. Specifically, this study was done looking at a person's job. If people merely *think* their job is physically demanding, regardless of how many calories they burn at work, resulted in healthier weights and more weight loss during dieting. Also, I have had insomnia all my life and still do. Before I was taking prescription medications for it, I would often drink beer and other alcohol to help fall asleep. Although it would get me to fall asleep quickly and reliably, I would wake up a few hours later with MAD anxiety and couldn't go back to sleep for the life of me. Often I would feel worse the next day after drinking then if I hadn't slept at all. Case in point: see a doctor if you have trouble sleeping. EDIT: About the temperature thing, I *always* turn the thermostat down a degree or two when I go to sleep (both in winter and summer) or I literally cannot sleep. I cannot fall asleep when it is too warm, and I set my thermostat to 72 in summer and 67 in winter, which is actually lower than most people I know. I do that primarily to save money, as those settings are the borderline to being uncomfortable. But I set them 1 or 2 degrees lower before I go to bed. If not, I wake up sweating profusely and cannot go back to sleep, if I even fall asleep at all. The week my air conditioner broke and while I was waiting for it to get repaired was probably the worst sleep I ever had in my entire life. All week.

My God! that rock climber! She's made of some pretty tough stuff, not only to survive it in the first place but to go through the multiple surgeries and rehabilitations processes afterwards. A very hardy lady! I'd probably be begging to be put out of my misery after a fall like that, if I'd survived it in the first place.

So, I have a bad habit of snoozing quite a bit every day before work. I have tried the no snooze thing for 2 weeks now and it actually makes me sleepier. Seems like the longer I snooze, the faster I feel awake.

I am a survival instructor and I was pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of all the information presented (could not comment on the leech portion since I have no jungle training however). Even the part at the end was correct, but you missed one thing: always go out with a proper survival kit made from items *you purchased individually!* Do not ever bring a premade survival kit into the wilderness with you. -when we buy premade survival kits, we tend to not even open them, and just chuck them in our bags, meaning we don't know how to use the tools inside when we most need them -most premade survival kits are filled with low-quality or garbage tools (remember you are placing your life in the hands of that flimsy cheap pocket knife) -A homemade survival kit, made from items you purchased individually, means some level of thought went it into every single item, and you are more likely to know how to use each item effectively A good survival kit, individually assembled, should include such things as a fixed-blade knife, a pot/cup to boil with, multiple methods of making fire, waxed tinder which can hold a light for multiple minutes, among other things. An excellent knife you can rely on with your life is the Mora Heavy Duty, a trusted knife by professional survivalists all over the world, which sells for only $20. I know of few other knives that are so cheap that you can definitely rely on. Les Stroud outlines a masterful emergency survival kit here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4vMgoCoi7V6isk&t Also, dayhikes are often more dangerous than long backpacking trips. During dayhikes we are more nonchalant, and more easily make mistakes. Always stay on the trail, it's much, much easier to get lost than you think. Stay safe in the woods!

what is it with everyone thinking the floor or the wall or whatever is "pushing back" against you? it's not. these static objects are not active agents. They don't start doing anything different when force or energy is applied against them. It would be more accurate to say they resist your weight or force applied because of their mass and atomic bonds and molecular cohesion and other such phenomena.
