There’s a healthy amount of music from Age of Mythology, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and some from the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Basically games from my childhood. I enjoy a hint of nostalgia 👌

Happy birthday 🎉! I enjoyed the several stories shared here relating to Halloween. I think something you could explore in the future is sharing related stories of spirits like these from different countries or from around the world. I personally enjoy seeing the similarities and differences in the beliefs and stories from different cultures. Good job!

This is poorly researched. You're just regurgitating lies made up by 18th Century Protestants to slander Catholics. We know nothing of Samhain except for its approximate date and that it was some kind of harvest festival. You skip around from modern to medieval to supposed ancient history so casually that I'm not in any way convinced that you even bothered to make sure you had some idea what you're talking about. For example, Samhain is November in modern Irish. That's not how it was spelled in old Irish, and the old month of Samhain doesn't map onto the (Roman) month of November perfectly. Just from this, it is very clear that you didn't read the original sources in their original languages. Do you have any actual sources to cite from before the 18th Century about the supposed ancient history of a medieval holiday? I expected more from you, and frankly, this makes me question the veracity of your other videos.
@Homamanya15 күн бұрын
Would you be able to provide the links for those sources? Honestly, this comment is just rude. Futile Facts never once claimed that all the information he provided was absolute truth. I believe this guy gathers the information that's accessible, processes it and puts it together. Why attack somebody's hard work?
@FutileFacts4u15 күн бұрын
Wow, thanks for taking the time to share such detailed feedback! You’ve raised some excellent points about the importance of original sources and the complexity of tracing a tradition like Samhain. I’ve said before in my videos that I’m a history enjoyer, and I avoid calling myself an expert. The channel is founded on the concept of sharing random information I learn in a simple cartoon enhanced way to encourage viewers to find out more on their own. I can definitely spend more time during the research stage of my videos and once I get more of a schedule for uploads I plan to increase the quality of the information as well. This video was a brief overview of Halloween history I also used as an opportunity to celebrate a milestone for the channel. I hope this helps you understand the type of content you see hereafter. Thanks again, and I hope you’ll enjoy future videos as we continue to grow!

@Homamanya The Two Babylons: Or The Papal Worship Proved to be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife by Alexander Hislop is the source of this idea that Halloween is pagan. And it's been repeated and repurposed since then to the point that people think that it's common knowledge. What ancient sources do we have about Samhain? The answer is none. The first accounts of it are from the middle ages where it is mentioned in passing as a harvest festival in stories like the Tochmarc Emire, but none of these sources give any information about how the holiday was celebrated or what beliefs were associated with it. The moving of All Saints' Day to November 1 was at first a local tradition in the city of Rome in the early medieval period because of the dedication of a church to all the saints. (There's much more to that story, and you should look it up.) The festival gradually spread to other parts of western Europe throughout the medieval period. It didn't reach Gaelic-speaking Christians until centuries later, and was not replacing what was at that point a holiday that we have no indication from any period sources was still being practiced. To claim a Celtic pagan origin would require positive evidence, but there are no primary sources to support that. There aren't any primary sources at all. The only accounts of any version of Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Breton, or other Celtic mythology all come from several centuries after it has ceased to be practiced, and they are myths, not treatises on the beliefs and practices of any group that spoke any member of the Celtic language family. We know what the Greeks and Romans believed and how they practiced their religions. They wrote it down. The Irish and other Celtic speaking tribes did not.

I dislike when people try to discredit Christianity by trying to claim pagan holidays are the "real" versions of our modern holidays, as if they were sucked in and appropriated by Christians. The truth is that pagan peoples who converted to Christianity usually preserved their traditions in a Christian context, which shouldn't be a bad thing. The difference in framing and context can make the Christian church appear egalitarian and cosmopolitan, or like a thief that stole holidays or something.
@FutileFacts4u15 күн бұрын
Absolutely. There is a lot of bias towards Christianity and it can easily ruffle some feathers. I like to keep a neutral approach and just focus on the simple history or raw beliefs of the matter, but people are people 🤷♂️
@Chris-io4iz15 күн бұрын
@FutileFacts4u except that you didn't focus on the history, and this contradicts what scholars in the fields of religious studies and history say. You got these "facts" from popular internet sources that didn't check to see that they were repeating 18th Century anti-Catholic propaganda. You really need to do some research before publishing things that aren't true.

Very confused by what that remark at the end's supposed to mean... "Some modern Ukrainians are still following the Julian Calendar for religious observances, though this is soon to fade out as Ukraine becomes more culturally aware of their roots"? Think what you will about the war, but that's just blatantly false. The roots of Ukraine as a nation state are incredibly closely intertwined with Byzantium which is precisely why they still use the Julian Calendar this way until today. Whether you're in favour of starting to use the Gregorian Calendar or not, it is *objectively* a departure from their cultural roots
@FutileFacts4u27 күн бұрын
You’re absolutely right, Ukraine’s connection to Byzantium and the Julian calendar is deeply rooted. My remark was meant to highlight the evolving relationship between cultural practices in the modern context and it definitely came off wrong. I’ll make sure to frame it better if it comes up in the future, thanks for the correction! 🙏

Hello, it would be interesting to have DnD related videos wherein you talk about world building ideas, historical settibgs, alternative history settings, and accurate mytgology settings. Surprisingly, all those ideas are quite rare as history nerds are not always RPG nerds, and vice versa. I am GM for many years, and I am the only person I know (I know many people) that has covered less common historical settings in DnD campaigns, such as one of my favourites that was with my players as armatols/hajduci in the Ottoman empire. I would really like to see new ideas and recommendations for historical, historically inspired, and mythological RPG campaign and world.
