Im bout to do a coffered this week...already started it....question....Why MDF over pre primed 1x? just wondering if I should be using MDF? honestly I try to stay away from it but more and more im seeing it in high end stuff from high end carpenters. Let me know your thoughts on it. much appreciated.
@TMPK2 күн бұрын
@@mirg6204 I like both, I just use whatever my builders want. But I feel like I can always glue and sand MDF joints smoother than primed wood. Maybe that’s why some people like it, I don’t know.

@TMPK17 күн бұрын
@@austincraft327 sometimes. If not, I do the full length ones perpendicular to the ceiling joist first, then if the ones that are parallel don’t hit a joist, I’ll glue and toenail them into the first boards and cross nail in the drywall. Once that glue sets it’s pretty solid

Loved the video. I going to build a mantel using the approach. I will be covering over and existing mantel of sorts so I will b boxing around what is already there. It looks like you are using a brad nailer. Not sure what length brad I should use? I'm thinking 1.5"? Anyway really like the video

Did you say you have the plans for this? I need to measure the poles and spacing. I have what appears to be the same size circle pit already there with pea gravel.
@TMPK23 күн бұрын
@@heatherclark6221 no plans, but what I did was cut an octagon out of 1x6’s and lay it on the ground where I wanted then dug the holes and places the post level in the corners. Then used the same length 6x6’s for the top. I think I did 12 ft long points on the top boards, but if I built it again I’d probably go down to 8 or 10 ft. We were always too far away to feel any heat from the fire. If you cut 8 equal sides at 22.5° you get an octagon. Good luck!

Hi you make great videos thank you 👍I have a question on coffered ceilings , we have a 9’ ceiling and an open stairwell in the middle of the main floor. My question is do you normally just build returns on crowns on either side of stairwell where wall ends to make one big open ended coffer or do you build a bulkhead around the open sides of the stairwell to butt into ? Please let me know your thoughts I cannot fine anything on the web on how to finish around an open stair case going up thru the ceiling. Did I say please , please 👍
@TMPKАй бұрын
@@rolfetimm1801 I’ve never run into that situation but I think I like the bulkhead around the open sides as long as that wouldn’t get into your head room coming down there stairs. Not that you’d have to pass an inspection on a house you already live in, but it could end up being a problem for resale. With a 9’ ft ceiling it shouldn’t be a problem but maybe hold up a board and see what it’s like walking down the stairs.

How do you paint it? To make it look so good?
@TMPK25 күн бұрын
@@arthurgarzon2475 I don’t do any of the painting at work. I’m just the carpenter so I build it then leave. I’m pretty sure the painters use a sprayer though. Primer first, light sanding, paint, sand, paint again. MDF usually takes 3 to 4 coats of paint because it’s so absorbent.
